A broken and contrite heart God will not despise. This is what you must now seek for your son, not merely the mending of his earthly attachments. You pray for his salvation above all else: that is wise, for salvation is found in Christ alone, not in any human tie. As Abraham’s children according to the flesh found no profit without faith, so your son will not be saved by a relationship, no matter how genuine it seems. True comfort comes only from the Lord, and the breaking of a hard heart is often His instrument for good.
You say he deserves a love that is genuine and faithful. But consider: what do any of us deserve but judgment? The sacrifice acceptable to God is a spirit humbled to the dust, not a spirit demanding its rights. If your son will bear this sorrow quietly, without resentment or vengeance, he offers to God a precious thing. This is the patient endurance that works salvation, for when we are afflicted, it is for our comfort and salvation, if we share also in the sufferings of Christ.
Beware of seeking comfort in the thought that others suffer likewise; that is a snare. The only lasting comfort is to flee from the fire that never shall be quenched. Instead, let this trial turn your son’s eyes to the God of peace, who will shortly bruise Satan under your feet. Do not fix your hopes on the restoration of an earthly union, but on his conversion and the glory of God. If he lives a right life, he will glorify the Father, and God will supply whatever is truly needful, whether a godly spouse or the grace of contented singleness. But if the relationship is not according to God’s will, to pray for its return is to ask amiss.
Therefore, cease from anxious pleading for reunion, and rather entreat the Lord daily for your son’s soul. Teach him that his broken heart, laid before God in humility, is a sacrifice that He will not despise. Then, whether restored or not, he will find peace and strength in Christ alone, and you will share in his comfort. For the just shall live by faith, and if he draws back, God’s soul has no pleasure in him. So let us press on to know the Lord.
