my word

Your request about being an owner and a steward, and about needing guidance both as one who leads and one who is led, goes right to the heart of what Scripture teaches about our relationship with God.

The Bible shows that everything we have is not truly our own. We are stewards managing what belongs to the Lord, and one day each of us will give an account for how we handled what He placed in our hands. That includes practical matters, documents, responsibilities, and influence over others. The call is to be faithful with what is entrusted to us, recognizing that we are handling our Master's goods and seeking to use them in a way that honors Him.

If you have put your trust in Jesus Christ, there is a deeper ownership at work. Scripture says in Ephesians chapter 1 that after you believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit. In the ancient world a seal was the mark of ownership placed on goods to show who had purchased them and who would claim them. God uses that picture to show what He has done for you. You have been bought with a price, the blood of Jesus, and your body and spirit are His. The Holy Spirit living in you is His mark upon you and His down payment, His guarantee that He will complete the redemption He began and one day bring you fully to Himself. You are not your own, you are His, and that is meant to be a source of security and confidence as you carry your responsibilities.

With that comes the need for His direction. Scripture warns us not to lean on our own understanding or trust in our own ingenuity and resources. In all your ways you are to acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. The early church modeled this by waiting on the Holy Spirit and looking to Him for guidance before they acted, saying it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to them. That same dependence is needed today, whether you are in the position of guiding others or in the position of being guided. In either case wisdom is found not by moving impulsively but by seeking the mind of the Lord and asking for His help and strength.

I will pray for you, that God will help you to be a faithful steward of what He has placed in your care, that you will rest in the assurance that you are sealed and owned by Him through Christ, and that the Holy Spirit will give you clear guidance as you lead when you need to lead and as you follow when you need to follow. May He guard you from relying on yourself and give you peace as you trust Him to direct your steps and to complete His work in you.
