We are lifting you and your son up together before the throne of grace today as he appears in criminal court for the first time, and we understand the weight and worry you carry as a parent in this moment. We thank God that your son has no prior criminal record, and we pray that this will be considered with fairness, yet we also know that God is both merciful and just and He calls us to respect the authorities He has established.
We are reminded in Romans 13:1 that every soul should be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God. This includes laws regarding weapons, which are given for the protection and order of society. If your son has done wrong in this matter, we pray that he will have the courage to be honest and to take responsibility, for Proverbs 28:13 tells us He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. True repentance brings freedom and opens the door for God to work for good even in difficult consequences.
We also cling to the promise in Psalm 34:18 that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, and in Psalm 50:15 Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me. We pray that your son will call on the Lord sincerely this day, not only for favor in court but for a changed heart that seeks to walk humbly and righteously before God. Micah 6:8 reminds us He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. We encourage you and your son to place your trust fully in Jesus Christ, confessing Him as Lord and believing that God raised Him from the dead, for that is the only way to receive forgiveness and eternal life.
So together we pray, Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You for this son and this family. We ask for Your mercy and Your justice to be present in that courtroom today. Guide the judge and all who have authority to act justly and with discernment. If there has been wrongdoing, bring conviction and repentance, and if there is opportunity for mercy and a second chance, we ask that You would grant it according to Your will. Comfort this parent with Your peace that surpasses understanding, and let this trial be a turning point where this young man seeks You with all his heart, turns from any wrong path, and walks in obedience to You. Protect his future, lead him away from any harmful associations or actions with weapons, and help him to become a man who honors You and respects the law. We have carried your burden for your son to the throne of grace this day, pleading that the God of all mercy would meet him in this hour of trial before the court.
When God has distinct and definite purposes of mercy towards a man, He often begins with stern discipline and brings him low by affliction and sorrow, that He may lift him up by grace. Your son stands now in a place of great seriousness, charged concerning a weapon, and though he has no former record, we know that all of us stand in need of a greater mercy than any earthly court can give. The Lord is slow to anger and plenteous in mercy. His sword of justice is not rusted in its scabbard, yet His hand holds it back, crying, sleep, O sword, for He will have mercy upon sinners and forgive their transgressions. He is infinitely good, and therefore He delights to show tenderness to those who seek Him.
We do not ask the Lord to set aside justice, for justice is His own attribute, but we do pray that mercy and truth may meet together in that courtroom today. We have prayed that if there be guilt, there may be honest confession and godly sorrow which worketh repentance, and if there be innocence or error, that truth may be made plain to those who judge. We have prayed for the judge and all who administer the law, that they may act with wisdom and impartiality, and that no hasty judgment may be given.
Above all we have prayed for your son's soul. All God's mercy to a sinner is gratis. He never sells, He always gives, and that mercy flows only through the golden channel of Jesus Christ His Son, who is the Great Messenger of the Covenant, the Interpreter between God and man. It was the highest tenderness that God should give up His own Son to bleed and die to accomplish our redemption. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. We have therefore prayed that this affliction may be made the footsteps of mercy in his life, that he may be led not only to desire deliverance from the penalty of the law, but to seek deliverance from sin itself, to feel the way of salvation as well as to know it, and to cast himself wholly upon Christ for pardon and a new heart.
Prayer is the forerunner of mercy, and often prayer itself is part of the mercy. So we urge you and your son to get you to the mercy seat. Let sin be confessed to God, let pardon be sought through the blood of Christ, and let the blessings of grace be sought with a broken and contrite heart. The God of your mercy will go before you. While you are yet speaking He hears, and He is able to give comfort even while the trial remains.
