Beloved of All
We have heard your prayer for your son as he faces the court for the first time on a weapons charge, and we are joining you in bringing him before the Lord. The love of a parent for a child is one of the strongest loves we know on earth, and Scripture uses that very love to help us see something of the Father's love for His Son. Just as a father loves his son deeply, so the heavenly Father loves His only begotten Son, the one full of grace and truth. There is only one begotten Son, Jesus Christ, and it was that beloved Son whom God gave because He so loved the world. When we see a father pleading for his son, we are reminded of how God understands that ache and has already shown the greatest love by giving His Son to be the sacrifice for us.
We are praying that your son and you will know the mercy of God in a fresh way. The Bible teaches that God sent His Son, born of a woman and born under the law, to redeem those under the law so that we might receive adoption as sons. We are not sons in the same way Jesus is the only begotten Son, we are adopted into God's family, and because we are sons God sends the Spirit of His Son into our hearts crying Abba, Father. That means you can come to God not as a stranger but as a child coming to a Father, honestly and humbly. Mercy is not something we deserve or can demand as a right. Scripture says, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. It is not because of our will or our effort, but because God shows mercy. We do not approach the court of heaven or an earthly court claiming God must act a certain way, we humbly ask the sovereign God who is free to show mercy to be gracious, and we thank Him that He has already shown such great mercy to us.
We pray for mercy and for truth together in this court appearance. We ask that grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, would be at work. No one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son reveals Him, and the Father has committed judgment to the Son so that all may honor the Son as they honor the Father. To have the Son is to have the Father, and our greatest hope for any person, whether in a courtroom or outside of it, is to acknowledge Jesus Christ as God manifested in the flesh, the promised Messiah, and to receive eternal life through Him alone. We pray your son will encounter that truth, and if he does not yet know the Lord, that this difficult moment would lead him to seek salvation through Jesus Christ and to become an adopted child of God.
We also remember how Scripture shows God present with those who are in courts and prisons. The prophet Jeremiah was held in the court of the prison and even let down into a dungeon with no water but mire, yet the Lord did not abandon him there. The Lord sees your son in that courtroom, He knows every detail of the charge, the evidence, and the fact that there has been no prior record. We pray for the judge and all who will decide, that they would act with fairness and discernment, that the truth would be clearly known, and that your son would himself be truthful and take responsibility for what is true. We pray for restraint and wisdom for him going forward, and that God would make him a vessel of honor, useful in His service. Scripture tells us Paul once acted in ignorance and unbelief, yet he obtained mercy, and God showed mercy to him, the chief of sinners, so that no one would think they are beyond the reach of God's grace.
There is a word of hope given through the prophet Hosea, where God says I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy, and to those who were called not my people He says, you are my people. That is the restoration God loves to bring. Even when a situation looks bleak, God can bring mercy where there was no mercy and make a new future. We ask the Lord to show that kind of restoring mercy to your son, according to His perfect will, whether that is through leniency in sentencing, through guidance for the legal process, or most importantly through a changed heart and life.
So we pray: Father, we come to you in the name of Jesus Christ your only begotten Son. Have mercy upon this young man as he stands before the court. Let truth be spoken and justice be done, and temper justice with mercy as only you can. Guard him, keep him from further harm, and draw him to yourself that he may receive adoption as your son through faith in Christ and have your Spirit crying Abba, Father in his heart. Give his parent peace, comfort, and strength to trust you and to continue to love and guide him in truth. Make his life, from this day forward, a vessel of honor for you. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who alone is our hope and our peace. Amen.
