My old dog

Your heart for your old companion comes through so clearly, and it is painful to watch a faithful friend who has shared your home for so long be ill and hurting. The Lord sees both her suffering and the burden you carry as you try to care for her well.

Scripture shows us that even the little household dogs, the beloved pets under the table, have a place in the life of a family. They are not unnoticed. The God who cares for all of His creation sees this small, lovable animal who has been part of your daily life, and He sees your love and concern for her.

Prayer is the place where strength is found. Jesus Himself showed us this by often withdrawing to pray, finding there both rest and renewal. That is the greatest picture of our own need. We are not meant to face days of adversity in our own strength, for if we look within ourselves we will find our resources soon exhausted. When our store of endurance is gone and our strength fails before the day is half through, our Father's giving has only begun. He is a rock higher than we are, a shelter and a strong tower where we can be protected.

I will pray with you for your dear dog, asking the Lord in His mercy to ease her pain and to bring healing if it is His will, and to give you wisdom for every decision you must make in caring for her. We do not place guilt on those who suffer, nor do we measure faith by whether healing comes at once. Sometimes the answer is a gracious healing, as it was when Epaphroditus was sick near to death and God had mercy on him. At other times the answer is that sustaining word given to Paul, My grace is sufficient for you, My strength is made perfect in weakness. In either case God remains merciful and near.

Blessed is the one whose strength is in the Lord. When we learn our own weakness and put our trust in Him, He turns even valleys of weeping into places of refreshment and causes us to go from strength to strength. He is the God who gives strength and power to His people.

May the Lord grant you His grace for each moment, His wisdom to know how best to comfort and care for her, and His strength in your inner being as you walk through this. May you know His love surrounding you both, His peace guarding your heart, and His presence as your shelter through every step ahead. In the name of Jesus we ask for His mercy, His comfort, and His sustaining grace to rest upon you both.
