Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Rejoice, for the promise is sure: the weapon formed against you shall not prosper. Yet do not let this joy make you forget the battle. Each day is a tempest, a storm in the marketplace of life, and you go forth into a fight. Prayer is the great weapon you must not leave behind. Before the dawn, arm yourself with supplication; make God gracious to you, and then no enemy can stand. For if you go out having first made God your friend through prayer, you will laugh at every attack, seeing the weapons of the foe fall powerless, like red-hot iron quenched in the water of patience.
But hear this also: the enemy never ceases to forge his darts. Anger, lust, envy, these are the horses and riders of wickedness, and they will come against you. Yet if you clothe yourself with mercy, forbearance, and a mild spirit, your very virtues become weapons that turn his devices back upon himself. You need both God’s grace and your own striving. He has freed you from the greater evils by sheer mercy; now, as His friend, you must contribute your share, working together with that grace. Do not merely revel in the word you heard, but be the saint in Christ Jesus, set apart from the profane world, walking in the power of that name.
Therefore, let your rejoicing lead you to your knees, not to ease. The tower that stands unshaken is prayer, the impregnable wall is a life of love. When the weapon forms, whether by people or circumstances, it cannot prevail against the soul that is guarded by faith and continual entreaty. As the unjust judge was worn down by persistence, so you hold fast, and you will see every hostile plan overthrown, just as Christ Himself stood in the temple, untouched until He willingly yielded. Go now, armed not with the excitement of a moment, but with the daily discipline of prayer and virtue, and the words of Isaiah will be not only a shout but a shield.
