We have read your request with heavy hearts and we are joining you in prayer for your mother and for you and your brother as you walk through this very difficult and confusing time.
We understand your deep worry as you watch your mother with early Alzheimer now experiencing several days of intense anxiety, pressure toward you, sleeplessness, constant calling, forgetting that her husband has passed, and seeing things that are not there like cockroaches on the ceiling. This sudden change over two to three days with new confusion, agitation, hallucinations and refusal of medication is very concerning, and we are glad you have already told your brother to bring her to the doctor tomorrow. We encourage you to keep that appointment without delay, and if she worsens tonight, becomes unsafe, or continues to refuse needed medication, to seek urgent care even sooner. A sudden worsening like this is often not just the Alzheimer itself but what doctors call delirium, which can be triggered by an infection, dehydration, lack of sleep, medication changes or interactions, pain, or other medical issues, and it needs prompt medical evaluation. Please bring a list of all her medications, any recent illnesses or falls, and notes on her sleep, eating, drinking, and these new behaviors so the doctor can see the full picture. We are not medical professionals, but we urge you to rely on godly wisdom and medical help together, for wisdom is needed in caring for those entrusted to us.
We also notice you cried out to the Lord for help, and we want to gently remind you that it is through Jesus Christ alone that we have access to the Father and assurance of salvation. You said Lord, and we want to be sure you know that Jesus is Lord. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your trust fully in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon His name in all your prayers, for in His name we have peace with God and the promise that He hears us.
The Lord sees your mother and your family in this trial. He promises, Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10 and The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18. Even as memory fades, God does not forget His children. He says, Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs will I carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver. Isaiah 46:4. He also honors your care for your mother, for we are commanded, Honor your father and your mother. Exodus 20:12 and Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Proverbs 23:22.
In these moments of anxiety and confusion, it helps to respond with calm reassurance rather than correction or argument. When she asks where her husband is, a gentle, brief and loving redirection is often kinder than repeatedly reminding her of his death, which can cause fresh grief each time. Keep her environment calm, well lit during the day and dim and quiet at night, keep routines simple, speak slowly and warmly, assure her she is safe and loved, and avoid overwhelming her with many questions or choices. Try to ensure she is drinking water, eating, and resting as able, and do not leave her alone if she is agitated or seeing things that frighten her. Also care for yourselves, for you are carrying a heavy burden. Cast your cares on Him, and He promises, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5.
We now pray together for you.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift this precious mother to You. You know her by name, You formed her, and You have carried her all her days, and we ask You to carry her now in this time of confusion and fear. Lord, have mercy and bring healing and peace to her mind and body. We ask You to guide the doctors tomorrow, give them wisdom to find any underlying cause for this sudden change, to treat it effectively, and to give clear direction for her care and medications. Calm her anxiety, grant her sleep at night and rest in the day, remove the frightening illusions, and surround her with Your presence so she feels safe and loved even when she cannot understand. Heal her as only You can, for You heal the broken in heart, and bind up their wounds. Psalm 147:3.
We also lift her children to You. Strengthen them, Father, when they are weary and worried from constant calls and sleepless nights. Give them patience, gentleness, and words of love that reflect Your compassion. Help them to honor their mother with tender care and to not grow discouraged. Provide them with support from family, community, and medical help, and guard their own health and peace. Teach them to come to You with every burden, for You have said, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28.
We ask all of this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, trusting that You hear us and that Your will is perfect and loving. Amen.
