The trial of reduced hours and scanty provision is a heavy one, yet this is but an appointed time, a warfare measured by the hand of Him who numbers our days. You did not appoint it for yourself, and therefore you may have no regrets about the appointment, but rest in the wisdom of the Lord. The Lord reigns, and all things work together for good to them that love God; you may safely conclude that there is lifting up. Though now your husband’s labours seem pinched, and his purse straitened for his evangelistic toil, remember that the Gospel is your lever, but full assurance must be the arm to work it with, and God the Holy Spirit must work all this in those whom He prepares. His work in the hearts of men He must and will carry on to His own praise and glory, let who will say no to Him. Even when the visible means fail, the ministry is not left destitute, for God often uses such seasons to display His direct supply, that the excellency of the power may be seen to be of Him and not of us.
In all this, sin not by unbelieving speeches, nor charge God foolishly. Job, when stripped of all, arose and worshipped; and if God could uphold Job in all that loss and grief, you may be sure that He can support your household now. Look to Him for this divine support. Your husband’s bow, which now seems slack, shall be renewed in his hand; though he now sorrowfully deplores the loss of what was once fresh, yet wait upon the Lord, for they that wait upon Him shall not lack any good thing. The one who preaches the unsearchable riches of Christ must also trust those very riches when the purse grows thin. Does not the Apostle remind us that those who proclaim the gospel should live by the gospel? But if for a season Providence permits a scarcity, it is no sign of abandonment but a testing of faith, a furnace to burn away dross. Your husband’s hours are cut back, yet his true work is never measured by the clock of men. Even in want, the word he sows can yield a harvest for eternity. Encourage him to remember that the laborer is worthy of his hire, but his worth is not in silver and gold.
And you, O woman entrusted with the care of such a man, remember that your gentleness and meekness are a far greater adornment than anxiety over income. I have often taught that a wife’s chaste and quiet spirit can win a husband’s heart more than any worldly contrivance. Do not let this trial breed impatience or harshness; let your trust in God’s timing be the fragrance that fills your home. Support him with serenity, not with pressing fears, for a contentious or worried spirit does more harm to a marriage than a lean week. It is easy to feel the weight of uncertainty when the hours get cut and the numbers stop adding up. When a man is using his own resources to fund the work of the gospel, that pressure can feel doubly heavy. But what a commendable thing it is to see someone laboring with their own hands so that the good news can go forward without charge. That is the very pattern the apostle set when he worked night and day so he would not be a burden to anyone. He proved that he was not in the ministry for profit; he knew how to work and make a living, and he did it to support the calling God had placed on him. Your husband is walking a similar path, and that kind of faithful labor honors the Lord.
Remember that any work we do for God, including the work that funds the ministry, must flow from a response to His grace. It is not about earning points or striving to make something happen in our own strength. It is about trusting the finished work of Christ. Our salvation is a completed gift, and so is our standing before God. We come to His throne of grace to find mercy and help in our time of need, not to present our credentials. Your husband’s need is not a sign of God’s absence; it is an invitation to rest in the provision that flows from that same grace. The Lord who calls him to preach is the Lord who supplies the means, often through the work of our hands but always through His sovereign care.
In times like this, impatience can become our biggest enemy. We want God to work right now, this week, without a month or a year of waiting. But Scripture keeps reminding us that if we wait patiently, the Lord will work it out. He is in control, and He will bring to pass His purpose. The delay is not a denial. Often, God is doing a deeper work in us before He does a wider work through us. Those clumsy edges get chipped off, and we may not enjoy the process, but it is necessary. The testing of faith produces endurance, and endurance prepares us for the greater things He has planned.
Do not let this financial strain open a door for discouragement or strife. The enemy would love to use a difficult week to gain a foothold in your home. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, and forgiving. Guard your hearts against anxiety and refuse to give place to hopelessness. You are free from the obligation of men because your Father is extremely wealthy, and He takes good care of His children. So stand on that truth together.
