Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You ask for health, but consider this: when the Lord said of Lazarus, “This sickness is not unto death,” and yet he died, the sisters were not offended, though the event seemed contrary. Do not measure God’s answer by the appearance of the moment. Your fear itself may be the beginning of remedy, for the soul that trembles at illness is waking from slumber. The true danger is not the fever that passes, but the soul that remains cold as water, unstable, clinging to fleeting things. Bring that cold will to the Lord, that He may change it to wine, giving body and gladness.
Yet hear this warning: if health is restored, do not use it to run back to that which brings dishonor. When a man after forty days of recovery returns to the food that caused his sickness, has he not lost his former labor? The body’s health is the mother of many virtues if paired with self-control, but fullness and carelessness breed diseases worse than any demon. For the demon makes men humble and downcast after the attack, but sin leaves a venom in the soul, making it more insensible to shame.
Therefore, if sickness visits you, bear it thankfully, for those chastened here may put away many sins and depart purified. But whether in health or weakness, let your care be for the soul’s solidity. If it is well-instructed in virtue, all things become easy, even this present worry softens, for you will behold already that quiet harbor. So pray not merely for a passing comfort, but that your will, which differs nothing from water in its coldness, may be brought to Christ and strengthened, that you may be cause of gladness to yourself and those grandchildren. Such healing He grants at once, more completely than any physician’s art. Call upon the Name of the Lord in every place, and whether He grants immediate ease or permits the trial to linger for your purifying, know that He ceases not to change our weak and unstable wills. This is the health worth seeking above all.
