My son has a dog he left with me and he is getting up in age and I feel he not doing good and I prey that he doesn't suffer any way and pray if he has to go let him go with our pain

While our hearts ache with you in this difficult time, we want to gently remind you that our prayers are centered on the will of God, who created all things, including the animals we cherish. The Bible tells us in Psalm 145:9, "The Lord is good to all. He has compassion on all he has made." We can trust that God’s love extends even to the creatures He has placed in our care.

First, let us address the matter of prayer. You mentioned that you "prey" for your dog, but we want to lovingly correct that to "pray." More importantly, we must emphasize that prayer is only effective when directed to God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said in John 14:13-14, "Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it." There is no other name by which we can approach God or receive answers to our prayers. If you have not yet placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, we urge you to consider doing so, for He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Salvation comes only through believing in Him, as Acts 4:12 declares, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved."

Now, let us lift this situation to the Lord in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, asking for Your mercy and grace for this dear dog who is growing older. Lord, You know the number of his days, and we trust in Your perfect wisdom and love. If it is Your will, we ask that You would ease any suffering he may be experiencing and grant him comfort in his final days. If the time has come for him to pass from this life, we pray that You would take him gently, without pain or distress. We thank You for the joy and companionship he has brought to this family, and we ask that You would comfort their hearts as they prepare to say goodbye. May Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We also want to encourage you to seek wisdom and discernment in this time. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." If you feel that the dog’s quality of life is declining, it may be a kindness to consult with a veterinarian to understand his condition better. Sometimes, the most loving thing we can do is to let go when suffering becomes inevitable.

Lastly, we want to leave you with this thought from Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, "For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die." This is a natural part of life, and while it is painful to say goodbye, we can find comfort in knowing that God holds all things in His hands. May He grant you peace and strength as you navigate this difficult season.

Lord Jesus, look with mercy on this dog who has been a faithful companion. Grant him comfort, ease any pain, and guide the hands of those who care for him. When his time comes, let it be quiet and free of suffering. Wrap this dear one who wrote to us in Your calming presence. Steady their heart, lift the burden of anxious watching, and fill them with the gentle assurance that they are not alone, that You see this love and hold both them and this beloved animal in Your care. How much this poor world needs comforting, and how tenderly our God stoops to provide it, even in the small and seemingly insignificant trials of life. The cry of your heart over your son’s aging dog does not escape His notice, for He marks the falling of every sparrow, and His mercy is over all His works. You fear the shadow of suffering, and you long for a gentle passage free from pain. That very longing, that compassionate tremor, is a reflection of the tender mercy of our God, who Himself has no pleasure in the death of any creature, but delights in compassion.

There is a singular season for mercy, even in a desert place of worry like this. You sit by the well of your daily cares, and the Lord meets you there with a home question for your heart. Do you believe that His hand is in all things, even the appointed time for this creature? No weapon of protracted suffering can be formed against you or this poor beast without His divine permission. All God’s mercy is free, unearned, and governed by His own wise love. You ask that the dog not suffer, but see here the deeper comfort: the Lord often does not simply remove the trial, but He quickens the soul with His Word, and in so doing, He gives true comfort. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your Word has quickened me. The outward circumstance may remain, but the inward strength and peace from Him cause the fear to subside.

Cast this burden upon Him who stands at the door of mercy, full of pity. If the appointed hour comes for the creature’s departure, remember that for the redeemed, the future is one where sorrow and sighing flee away. No more pain, no more parting of any kind shall touch us there. The ransomed of the Lord shall return with everlasting joy, and we shall forget our former miseries, or remember them only as waters that have passed away. Until that day, be established in this good comfort: God’s ways are not our ways, but they are always ways of faithfulness. As you have known the rock Christ Jesus in the greater matters of your soul, stand on that same solid rock now, and feel your steady soul fearing no more than the hills when the breakers roar. Your Lord knows all things, and He knows the silent groaning of your spirit for this small companion. Trust His heart when you cannot trace His hand.

How kind it is that your heart is moved with compassion for this creature, for the mercy shown even to a beast is not unnoticed by God, who cares for all His works. Yet remember that the sufferings of this present time, whether of man or beast, are but fleeting. Pray that God’s will be done: if this dog must depart, ask that it be without lingering pain, but do not let your prayer become a demand, as though you would instruct the Almighty. Let your words be mingled with thanksgiving, and let no bitter cursing enter your heart, for the mouth that receives the holy Mysteries must utter nothing offensive. As we are commanded to pray for all men, even unbelievers, much more may we pray for the creatures that share our life. But above all, seek mercy for your own soul and for your son, that you both may be vessels of mercy, fitted for glory. Endure whatever comes with long-suffering, knowing that God’s providence orders all things in wisdom. The spark of sorrow that falls into a soul steeped in patience is soon quenched and does not disturb. So let this trial teach you to cling to the eternal things, where neither suffering nor death shall enter.

It refines our compassion, strips away the shallow, and teaches us to lean on things that do not pass away.

The ache you are feeling right now, the desire to protect this animal from any misery, mirrors something true about our own walk. Our flesh always wants to avoid the hard road. Even the disciples recoiled when Jesus spoke of His own suffering, crying out for Him to spare Himself. But God often uses these moments of helplessness, when we cannot fix what is breaking, to draw our eyes toward what is eternal. The temporary things, even the good gifts of companionship, are fading. That does not make the bond meaningless, but it does invite us to set our hope on the unseen. The depth of character being formed in you through this very concern, the tenderness that prays for a painless end for a helpless animal, is not wasted on God. That softness is the very soil where faith grows deep roots.

It is natural to ask why, and often that question simply hangs in the air without a full answer. The refining purpose usually becomes clearer only when we look back. I think of how Joseph had to endure years of prison, unable to see the plan that was preserving life through his misery. At the moment, it just felt like chains and isolation. Your vigil over this dog, the sorrow of watching age do its work, is a way of learning submission to a wisdom much larger than our own. You are placing the life of this creature into the hands of a faithful Creator who does all things well, even when the path leads through a shadowed valley. That is the very essence of learning obedience through what we suffer, committing our concerns to God instead of demanding a particular outcome.

There is no glory in suffering for its own sake, but there is always a purpose in it when we entrust our souls to God. You are asking that the passing, if it must come, be gentle. That is a merciful prayer. It reflects the heart of a good shepherd. Hold onto that compassion, but do not let the fear of pain overwhelm you. The sufferings we face here, and even the quiet grief of losing a pet, are light and momentary when set against the surpassing weight of glory that awaits. They are working something in us that this world cannot give. For now, continue to look to Jesus, who cares about every sparrow that falls. Trust His kindness even in the small details of a dog’s final days. He will carry you through the sorrow, and He will surely care for the creature He made.
