Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The sudden crash that threw your ### into pain and peril is a summons that shakes not only the body but the household of the soul. The Church is a spiritual surgery: here the wounds received out in the world are meant to be healed, not to fester or to multiply. Do not, then, bring only the broken frame in your petitions as if the flesh were the whole man. What gain is there if the legs are straightened but the heart remains twisted with old grudges and division? The apostle cries out that even the power to heal, even a faith that moves mountains, even the surrender of the body to flames, is hollow noise if love is absent. The devil makes war on his own kindred, and people who bear the image of God become like the beasts who have no understanding when they refuse forgiveness and bite one another.
You have asked for unity, forgiveness, love, and joy. This is the miracle you must hunt with greater eagerness than the closing of a wound. If you obtain that heavenly love, then whether the recovery is swift or slow, you have laid hold of treasure that cannot be taken. I beseech you, do not cast away your confidence, for it carries a great reward. Perhaps you have heard these words many times and remained unmoved, like a tree that endures stroke after stroke yet stands. It is not wasted. The blows heap up, and at last a single blow topples the whole trunk. Let this accident be that merciful blow. Let the long stubbornness of your families fall at once, and let the fruit of repentance spring up in its place.
Bear the trial with thankfulness. If God grants a quick mending of the body, glorify Him. If He delays or if permanent marks remain, remember that the righteous man who endures nobly receives a far greater weight of glory. The one who heals bones is the same Lord who heals souls, and His power is more than any physical cure. So do not fix your eyes only on the follow-up appointments and the hope of minimal pain. Look higher. Let the ### who serves her ### find in this labor the medicine that dissolves old injuries. Let the whole family discover that to forgive and to cherish is to share already in the joy that Christ promised.
Go to that bedside and practice the craft of love. Wash away bitterness with small deeds of kindness. Pray for the injured body, as you ought, in the name of Jesus. But pray ten times more fervently that the scattered hearts be knit together, that the evil humor of resentment be purged from the inward eye, and that all of you may see clearly the beauty of the Son of God, who heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds. That is the health no catastrophe can steal, and it stands ready for those who hold fast their boldness and refuse to let it slip.
