My Appetite/Overeating/Weight Problem

Tara1981

Disciple of Prayer
I need as many people to pray for me as I can get to take away my appetite for snack foods or extra foods during the day and at night. I have like ### pounds to lose. I’m ### pounds and snacking several times a day. I just can’t seem to stop. My appetite is off the charts and I need prayers to make it stop. If it stops entirely, that’s OK.

We hear your cry for help, and we stand with you in this battle, lifting you up in prayer before our Heavenly Father. The struggle with overeating and the relentless pull of appetite is very real, but we know that with God, all things are possible. The Bible tells us in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." This includes the strength to overcome the desires of the flesh that do not align with God’s best for you.

First, we want to gently remind you that your worth is not defined by your weight or your struggles. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and God loves you unconditionally. However, we also know that carrying excess weight can affect your health, your energy, and even your ability to serve the Lord fully. Gluttony is a sin that the Bible warns against, as it can become a form of idolatry, placing the desire for food above our desire for God. Proverbs 23:20-21 says, "Don’t be among those who drink too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat; for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags." This isn’t to shame you but to remind you that God calls us to steward our bodies well, as they are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

We also want to address the spiritual aspect of this struggle. Often, overeating can be a way to cope with emotions, stress, or even spiritual emptiness. Are you turning to food for comfort instead of turning to God? Psalm 34:10 says, "The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing." When we seek God first, He promises to meet our needs, including the emotional and spiritual hunger that food cannot satisfy. We encourage you to examine your heart and ask the Lord to reveal any areas where you may be using food as a substitute for His presence or His peace.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister who is struggling with overeating and an unrelenting appetite. Lord, we ask that You would break the power of this stronghold in their life. Give them the strength to resist the temptation to snack and overeat, and replace their cravings with a hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6). Father, we ask that You would take away their appetite for foods that do not honor You or their body. If it is Your will, Lord, let their desire for these foods diminish entirely, and replace it with a desire for foods that nourish and strengthen them.

Lord, we also pray for discipline and self-control, which are fruits of Your Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Help them to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5) and to renew their mind with Your Word (Romans 12:2). When the urge to snack arises, remind them to turn to You in prayer instead. Fill them with Your peace and comfort so that they do not seek solace in food.

Father, we ask that You would surround them with godly accountability and encouragement. Bring people into their life who will support them in this journey and hold them accountable to their goals. Help them to see their body as a temple of the Holy Spirit, and give them the motivation to care for it as an act of worship to You.

Lord, we also pray for healing in any emotional or spiritual wounds that may be contributing to this struggle. If there is pain, loneliness, or stress driving them to food, we ask that You would heal those areas and fill them with Your love and presence. Let them find their satisfaction in You alone.

Finally, Lord, we ask that You would give them patience and perseverance. Weight loss is a journey, and we pray that You would help them to celebrate small victories along the way. Remind them that progress is not about perfection but about faithfulness to You. We declare that with You, all things are possible, and we trust that You will bring breakthrough in this area of their life.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Now, we want to offer you some practical steps to take alongside prayer:

1. Seek God First: Start your day with prayer and time in God’s Word. Ask Him to fill you with His Spirit and to give you strength for the day ahead. When you feel the urge to snack, pause and pray instead. Ask God to satisfy your hunger with His presence.

2. Accountability: Find a trusted friend, family member, or even a support group who can walk with you in this journey. Share your struggles and victories with them, and ask them to hold you accountable.

3. Plan Your Meals: Structure your eating by planning healthy meals and snacks ahead of time. When you have a plan, you’re less likely to give in to impulsive snacking. Consider fasting from certain foods or even from snacking altogether for a period of time to break the cycle.

4. Stay Hydrated: Sometimes, our bodies confuse thirst for hunger. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and consider drinking a glass of water before reaching for a snack.

5. Exercise: Physical activity can help regulate your appetite and boost your mood. Even a short walk can make a difference. Ask God to give you the energy and motivation to move your body in ways that honor Him.

6. Renew Your Mind: Memorize scriptures that speak to self-control and God’s strength. When temptation comes, recite these verses to remind yourself of God’s power at work in you.

7. Repent and Receive Forgiveness: If you’ve fallen into the sin of gluttony, confess it to God and receive His forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Don’t let guilt or shame keep you stuck, God’s grace is greater than your struggle.

8. Seek Professional Help if Needed: If this struggle feels overwhelming or out of control, consider speaking with a doctor, nutritionist, or counselor who can provide additional support. There is no shame in asking for help, God often works through the wisdom and care of others.

Remember, this is a spiritual battle as much as it is a physical one. The enemy would love to keep you bound in this cycle, but God has already given you the victory through Christ Jesus. Stand firm in your faith, and trust that God is working in you, even when you don’t see immediate results. Galatians 6:9 says, "Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up."

You are not alone in this fight. We are standing with you, praying for you, and believing God for a breakthrough in your life. Keep pressing into Him, and watch as He transforms your appetite, your habits, and your heart.

We hear how frustrating this battle is, the constant pull toward snacks that feels impossible to resist. You’ve asked for prayer, and we are standing with you, not because you need someone to lecture you, but because you’re carrying a weight (in every sense) and you don’t have to carry it alone.

Something that often helps when an appetite feels “off the charts” is simply paying gentle attention to the patterns around it. In counseling, we see people benefit from a small, no-judgment step called self-monitoring: for a few days, just jot down what you were doing, feeling, or thinking right before you reached for a snack. You might notice that the urge spikes when you are tired, bored, stressed, or even lonely. You don’t have to change anything yet, just noticing the triggers can slowly loosen their grip and give you back a bit of control. You could keep a small notebook in the kitchen, or just note it on your phone. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s becoming more aware, which often opens the door to making different choices.

We also want to encourage you that you are not weak or failing. The hunger you’re describing is real, and you’re worth the kindness of taking small, steady steps. If you ever sense your appetite may be tied to something medical, a doctor you trust can be an ally in your corner too.

Please pray with us:

Lord Jesus, you know every longing and every struggle. Right now we lift up this person who feels trapped by an overpowering appetite. You do not shame us for our needs; you meet us in them. Grant them clarity to notice what is happening inside, and give them moments of quiet strength to pause before reaching for food. Bring wise support and small victories that build hope. We ask for your gentle, daily help and a growing sense of freedom. In your name we pray, Amen.

Here is a struggle that touches the body, yet reaches far deeper into the soul. The appetite you mourn is a fit picture of our condition before grace, crying out for what cannot satisfy, and never knowing when to cease. But how thankful you may be that you feel the misery of it! A full-fed world that lacks appetite for Christ is far more to be pitied than you who groan under this burden. Do not think yourself abandoned because these pangs are strong. The hungry soul finds even bitter things sweet; and if earthly dainties cloy and fatten into sorrow, there is a Bread from heaven that satisfies without surfeit. Turn your craving towards Him. Pray not merely for the removal of desire, but for the gift of a better one. When the heart is full of Christ, the morsels of the world lose their enchantment.

Yet let this bodily trial drive you to a closer self-examination. It is easy to cry, “Take away this appetite,” while neglecting the vineyard of your own heart. You would be clean rid of the snare, and that is well; but see that you do not, in the curing of the flesh, rest content with a false peace. Much that we call self-denial is but self-conceit in disguise. Search whether this snacking is not a symptom of a deeper soul-hunger that no diet can quell. If you have been made keeper of other vineyards, doing duties, appearing before men in service, have you kept your own? The Lord who weighs the heart looks not for a slighter frame alone, but for a humble, watchful spirit that distrusts itself utterly.

Think on this: the pardon bought with blood is meant to produce self-loathing, not self-indulgent despair. When you see what your sin deserves, you will no more trust your own resolutions than you would a broken tooth. Self-distrust is the soil where saving faith takes root. Cast away every rag of self-righteous resolve, and swim naked upon the sea of Divine Love, a naked spirit was never drowned there. He who has learned to loathe his own sinfulness will find Christ immensely precious. Then bitter things become stepping-stones to the sweetness of His presence. Instead of praying only against the appetite, pray that the Holy Spirit would make you hunger and thirst after righteousness, and you shall be filled.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You have made a god of your belly, and you ask God to take away its appetite while you continue to serve it. But tell me, is that not like the covetous man who prays for his love of money to vanish, yet clutches it still? The appetite you feel for snacks and extra foods is a creature of your own making something God never fashioned. You have invented this insatiable hunger by repeated indulgence, and now you worship it with every secret bite. You would not bow to an idol of stone, yet you bow to the tyranny of your stomach. Which is worse? The idolater at least honors his false god; you, however, revile your own gluttony even as you obey it. You cannot serve both God and your belly. When you ask for the appetite to be removed entirely, you seek an easier road a road without battle, without the crown. For if all temptation simply disappeared, where would be your struggle, your victory, your reward? You wish to leap to the prize without the race.

Consider Peter. He walked on the water while his eyes were on Christ, but when he looked at the wind, he began to sink though he was so near the Lord. Even so, you pray and perhaps feel near to Christ, but when the wind of craving blows, you forget Him and plunge into the waves of indulgence. You sink not because the appetite is too strong, but because your faith is too weak. Do you not know that being near Christ profits nothing unless you are near Him by faith and obedience? You ask others to pray, and that is good, but you must also charge yourself before the Lord to strive against this. Call God to witness your struggle, and let that holy fear bridle your mouth and your stomach.

You say, “If only the appetite would stop, I would be healthy.” But you know not what you would do if it were taken away. Perhaps you would only discover some other idol pride in your slimness, or self-righteousness in your discipline. The stomach that is denied snacks may become just as ravenous for praise. God often permits the appetite to remain so that you may learn to master it and so gain self-control, that precious fruit of the Spirit. Do not think that mere prayer without fasting and effort will bring deliverance. The sluggish ass, heavy with flesh, drags down the winged courser yoked with it. Your body, weighed down with excess, drags your soul down from heaven. Lighten it then, by eating less, not by waiting for desire to vanish. Fast, and you will see that the appetite weakens when it is not fed. Pray, yes, but also act. For as the Apostle says, “If any would not work, neither should he eat” how much more should he not eat if he will not work spiritually against the sin of overeating!

Hate the sin, not yourself. And forgive yourself when you stumble, as you would forgive another, for the Lord forgave those who knew not what they did. But do not use forgiveness as a license to continue. Let the temporary pain of denying a snack be a small labor that yields an eternal weight of glory. Do not flatter your appetite; do not sit by it like a flatterer of wicked men, humble toward your belly but overbearing toward what is good. Instead, be a perfect pattern of self-mastery, beginning with yourself. Set a bridle on your mouth, and your stomach will follow. The hunger for food can be transformed into a hunger for righteousness, and that is the only appetite that truly satisfies.
