my ### and ### and its parenting husband struggles

Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for me and my family as I take a difficult step forward with my agoraphobia. I’m ###, autistic, and I struggle severely with leaving home and being around people. Because of this, I haven’t been able to do many normal things with my wife and our ###-year-old son. In fact, we have barely gone out together as a family. I went to church for the first time last Sunday by myself, and this Sunday I’m hoping to come back with my wife and son. The pastor is helping us with transportation, which I’m very grateful for, but the whole situation is causing me a lot of anxiety. I worry about being noticed and judged, especially because we don’t currently work and are surviving on government benefits, and some people in our apartment building know about our situation. I also feel self-conscious about standing out at church and about how my wife and young son might be perceived. More than anything, I want to overcome this fear so that I can be a better husband and father and actually take my son places and experience life with my family. I feel guilty that he is already ### and my anxiety has kept me from doing so much with him. Please pray that God gives me courage, peace, and strength to leave my comfort zone, that I won't be consumed by fear of what other people think, and that I can continue taking small steps forward. Please also pray for my wife and son as we make this journey together. Most of all, please pray that God helps me trust Him instead of letting fear control my life, and that this can be the beginning of a new chapter for our family. Thank you for praying for us.

We hear your heart, brother, and we stand with you in lifting this heavy burden before the Lord. Your courage to take even the smallest step outside your comfort zone is a testament to your love for your family and your desire to walk in faith. Agoraphobia and autism can make the world feel overwhelming, but we serve a God who does not call us to live in fear. "For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7). You are not alone in this battle, Christ is with you, and so are we.

Your concern about being judged by others is understandable, but we must remember that the opinions of man pale in comparison to the approval of God. The world may look at your circumstances, your reliance on government benefits, your struggles with leaving home, and make assumptions, but the Lord sees your heart. He knows your desire to be a godly husband and father, and He honors that. "But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart'" (1 Samuel 16:7). Do not let the fear of man steal the joy of stepping out in faith.

We also want to encourage you in your role as a father. It is clear that you love your son deeply and long to give him the experiences he deserves. The guilt you feel is not from the Lord, it is the enemy’s attempt to weigh you down. God does not condemn you for the struggles you face; He invites you to bring them to Him. "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit" (Romans 8:1). Your son needs you to model trust in God, even in the midst of fear. That is a lesson more valuable than any outing.

Your wife is a gift from the Lord, and we pray she feels His strength and peace as she walks this journey with you. Marriage is a partnership, and she needs your leadership just as much as your son needs your presence. "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Lean on each other, and lean on Christ.

We also want to gently remind you of the importance of placing your trust in Jesus Christ. It is only through His name that we have access to the Father, and it is only by His sacrifice that we are saved. "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me'" (John 14:6). If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender your life fully to Him, for He is the source of true peace and courage.

Now, let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of compassion for our brother and his family. Lord, we ask that You would go before him as he takes these steps of faith. Calm his anxious heart and replace his fear with Your perfect peace. "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful" (John 14:27). Give him the courage to trust in You, knowing that You are his refuge and strength.

Father, we pray for his wife and son. Strengthen their bond as a family, and let them feel Your presence in every moment of this journey. Help them to support one another with love and patience. We ask that You would open doors of opportunity for them to grow together in faith and in life.

Lord, we rebuke the spirit of fear that has held our brother captive. We declare that he is more than a conqueror through Christ who loves him (Romans 8:37). Help him to fix his eyes on You, not on the opinions of others. Let this be the beginning of a new chapter for his family, one where they walk in the freedom and joy that comes from trusting in You.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

Keep pressing forward, brother. Each step you take is a victory, and we believe God is going to do great things in and through your family. You are not defined by your struggles, you are defined by your faith.

It takes real courage to walk into a church alone when every part of you wants to stay hidden, and you did that. That wasn’t a small step; it was a significant one, and we don’t want to gloss over it. Your desire to overcome this not for your own comfort but so you can lead your family well and give your son experiences with his dad tells us a lot about the man you are. That kind of love is the very place God meets us.

That knot of anxiety about being noticed or judged, we know it feels huge. We also know that most people at that church are far less focused on you than your fears whisper. Still, the fear is real, and we pray against the weight of it. For this Sunday, maybe the one thing to hold onto is simply: “God sees me. He is with my wife, my son, and me. We belong to Him.” That’s enough.

Please don’t heap guilt on yourself over the years that have already passed. You’re showing up now. Your son will remember a dad who kept trying, not a perfect timeline. And your wife, she will see a man who faced something terrifying because he wanted more for his family.

Lord, surround this father with Your steady peace that doesn’t make sense to his anxious heart. Quiet the noise of what others might think and let him feel Your smile on this small, brave act of trust. Guard his wife and son as they go together, and make this Sunday a gentle beginning. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I was exactly like you. I am an introvert and was always conscious of what people thought. When someone approached to speak to me l used to be terrified. When l walked on the road, l used to think that the whole world is staring and laughing at me. But when l turned ### something changed in me. I realized l have not lived my life fully because l was superconscious of my image in the society. On my ###th birthday l decided to change one step at a time. I remember the immense effort l put to make eye contact with people and smile. I decided l will not assume what is going on in other people’s mind, l will just be me and it is for others to accept me just the way l am. It is ### years since. I am still not 100% comfortable, l still feel a sort of nervous and self conscious, but l have come a long way. I think my best achievement is that l have stopped over thinking. I have become more courageous and can walk on the street looking forward and not bending my head down while walking.

Lord Jesus, please pour out your choicest blessings on this brother and fill him with your encouragement and courage. Please bless the family with a life filled with happiness, peace and prosperity. Amen.

I hear your cry, and the very act of declaring your ways, as David did, is a good beginning. You have spread your case before the Lord, and He who heard you will surely teach you His statutes. Your fears are not hidden from the eye that sees the sparrow’s fall, nor from the heart that pities our frame. But lay hold of this strong comfort: the Son of God took our flesh, and because He is God and Man, fear is vanquished. He came not to drive you deeper among the trees of the garden, but to walk with you in the cool of the day and call you out with a tender, “Where are you?” The church into which you venture is the pillar and ground of the truth, not a judgment seat of worldly eyes. There the truth that sinners are welcomed by free grace is held high; there the lowly are lifted and the proud humbled. Let men think what they will of your circumstances, for the loftiness of man shall bow before the God who exalts the meek.

Daniel faced his lions because he first set his face before his God; he feared not the roar of the beast because he had gazed into the face of his covenant Lord. So must you draw near. Cry “my God, my God,” as though no other had a claim, and let the sneers of the apartment block and the imagined whispers at pew and aisle grow dim. True courage is not the absence of trembling; it is trust in the God who is God and not man, whose mercy is broader than the narrow judgments of the proud, and whose strength is perfected in your weakness. Yours is an appointed warfare, each day’s battle measured out by a Father’s hand, and every small step, that first Sunday and this next, is a victory of grace. Your young son will yet know you as a man who fought his fears and found God faithful, and your wife will lean upon the strength that comes not from the flesh but from the Spirit’s own enabling. Go this Sunday, not before men, but before your God, and you will know a peace that passes understanding. Trust in the Lord, and let fear be silenced; for He who called you out of darkness will perfect that which concerns you, and your family shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
