Elodie

Humble Servant of All
Please pray fervently on my behalf. My mother exhibits an exceedingly negative demeanor. Despite my numerous attempts to enhance my circumstances and overall life, she persistently criticizes me. She often pretends to offer me guidance, which I diligently adhere to, yet she claims that I do not follow her counsel. Subsequently, she utters hurtful remarks regarding my current situation, asserting that it remains stagnant due to my failure to heed her advice. Whenever I confide in her about a challenge I am facing, she weaponizes that information to make me feel inferior. I ask for prayers that she swiftly alters her behavior, as I can no longer endure her detrimental conduct and disparaging comments. She frequently yells at me over the phone and subjects me to verbal abuse.

We hear the deep pain and exhaustion in your words, and our hearts ache with you as you endure this ongoing struggle with your mother. The Bible tells us to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12), but it also calls us to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and to guard our hearts from toxic patterns that bring harm. Your mother’s behavior, criticism, manipulation, and verbal abuse, is not reflective of the love and patience God calls us to show one another. It is right to set boundaries, even with a parent, when their words and actions bring destruction rather than edification.

First, we must address the weight of this situation with the Lord, for He alone can soften hearts and bring healing where there is brokenness. Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear one who is enduring such pain at the hands of their mother. Lord, You see the tears, the frustration, and the weariness that comes from being subjected to constant criticism and verbal abuse. We ask that You would move mightily in this mother’s heart, breaking the hardness that has taken root and replacing it with Your love, humility, and grace. Soften her words, Lord, and let her see her child through Your eyes, as a beloved creation, worthy of respect and kindness. We also pray for strength and wisdom for this one who has been hurt. Give them the courage to set boundaries where needed, the discernment to know when to speak and when to remain silent, and the peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their heart. Heal the wounds that have been inflicted, Father, and replace bitterness with forgiveness, not because the behavior is excusable, but because You have called us to walk in love. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that hearts are transformed and relationships are restored. Amen.

The Bible does not shy away from addressing dysfunction in relationships, even within families. Proverbs 29:22 warns, "An angry person stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins." Your mother’s outbursts and hurtful words are not just personal failings, they are sins against you and against God. Yet, as difficult as it may be, we are called to respond in a way that reflects Christ. Romans 12:17-21 instructs us, "Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, ‘Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.’ Therefore, ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.’ Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

This does not mean you must endure abuse or allow her to continue wounding you. Setting boundaries is not only wise but biblical. Jesus Himself withdrew from those who sought to harm Him (Luke 4:28-30), and Proverbs 22:24-25 warns, "Don’t befriend a hot-tempered man, and don’t associate with one who harbors anger: lest you learn his ways, and ensnare your soul." You may need to limit conversations, take breaks from calls, or even seek godly counsel on how to navigate this relationship in a way that protects your heart while still honoring the Lord’s command to honor your mother.

We also encourage you to examine your own heart in this. Are there areas where you may be enabling her behavior by not setting clear boundaries? Are you seeking her approval or validation in ways that leave you vulnerable to her criticism? Galatians 1:10 reminds us, "For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn’t be a servant of Christ." Your worth is not defined by your mother’s words but by your identity in Christ. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and no amount of criticism can diminish the value God has placed on your life.

If this situation feels overwhelming, we strongly encourage you to seek support from a pastor, biblical counselor, or a trusted Christian mentor. You do not have to walk this path alone. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." Sometimes, an outside perspective can help you see more clearly how to respond in a way that honors God while protecting your heart.

Lastly, we must gently address the absence of Jesus in your request. It is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and it is His power that brings true transformation. If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender your life to Christ, for He is the only one who can heal the deepest wounds and give you the strength to endure. Romans 10:9-10 tells us, "that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." If you have already placed your faith in Him, we rejoice with you! If not, we invite you to consider the hope and peace that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ.

This is a heavy burden you carry, but you are not alone. The Lord sees your pain, and He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Trust in Him to guide you, to heal you, and to work in your mother’s heart in ways you may not yet see. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2), and lean on Him for the strength to endure. We will continue to stand with you in prayer, believing that God is at work even in this difficult season.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
