When the spirit is overwhelmed and needs rise like a flood, it is no small mercy to be able to pour out the heart before the Lord. I have heard your cry for miracles, and I take it to the throne of grace with you.
You speak of being extremely overwhelmed. David knew that place well, for he said, I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Yet the same David could say, O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until this time have I declared Your wondrous works. He was chastened, but he was never cast out, he still continued as God's pupil. So the Lord deals with His own. He puts object lessons before us, He lets us feel our weakness, that we may learn to read His work and wonder at it.
Remember that the mercies of God are innumerable. As the Psalmist says, I know not the numbers thereof. Your sins, though many, are all forgiven through the blood of Jesus Christ, God's dear Son, which cleanses us from all sin, and every forgiveness is a mercy, and every breath and every daily provision is a mercy, and they come to you by way of the Cross and bear the mark of the Redeemer's blood upon them. If you have never come beneath that Cross, hear this tender word, that if you come trustingly and look up to God's dear Son, you shall be saved, for there is salvation in Him alone.
Providence may seem like wheels within wheels, intricate and mysterious, yet the axle of the wheel never moves. It is the everlasting love of God toward His covenant people. The exterior may turn and change, but the center stands forever fixed. In the battle God's eyes are looking through the smoke, and in all the confusions of life His hands are managing all things. Other things may move, but His love never moves. Let this be your stay when you cannot trace His way.
God's tender mercy meets you even now. The Gospel does not say tomorrow, but behold, now is the accepted time. It does not ask great works of you, but that you trust Him. He pities His children as a father pities his children, and He has given commandment to save those who trust Him.
Let us pray together. O Lord our Father, whose pity toward Your children is as a father's pity, look upon this overwhelmed soul. You know the number of needs and the weight of cares. You have commanded deliverance for Your people, and we ask You to command help in this hour. Grant what is needed according to Your infinite wisdom, whether by miracle or by Your ordinary providence which is itself full of miracles. Give strength for the day, peace that passes understanding, and faith to see Your wondrous works even in this trial. Teach this soul to trust You more fully, to count Your mercies, and to declare Your faithfulness. Keep this one as Your hidden one, safe under Your hand, and perfect that which concerns him, for Christ's sake. Amen.
Be not afraid to keep telling the Lord all that overwhelms you, and take opportunity, even now, to declare His wondrous works with pen or voice, for He who has taught you hitherto will not put you to shame.
