You ask prayer for the ministry you are starting. That is a good and necessary request, for the ministry of the word must be founded on prayer and on the prayers of the saints. But I warn you, do not think that the prayers of others will suffice if you yourself are not watchful. The devil knows how great a good prayer is, and he assails those who pray with drowsiness and distraction. Therefore, give yourself to prayer continually, with thanksgiving for all things, both seen and unseen.
Beware of idleness in this work, for if you have no real labour but spend your life unprofitably, your very ministry will be suspected of evil and you may bring an ill fame upon yourself. Let your conduct be such that no one can accuse you of base things. And when you do labour, do not seek vainglory by making a show of outward forms, for God desires not the widening of borders but the remembrance of His benefits. Even almsgiving and prayer, though they be good deeds, lose their reward if done for display.
Above all, humble yourself. Do not say, “What need have I of prayer?” Even Paul needed the prayers of the Church, and so do you. A generous teacher benefits his learners not by word only, but by prayer, and therefore we must give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.
Remember what a great thing this ministry is. You are called not to speak of earthly things, but of the kingdom of Heaven. It is a work that creates men anew, not merely changing them but making them wholly new. This is the power of God, not of man. So when you pray, do not pray as though God needed to be informed, but as Christ prayed, to show that your will is aligned with His and that the people may believe He has sent you. For He prayed not from weakness, but for the sake of those standing by.
Should you stumble after being made new, know that repentance can set you free from the old age of sin, though it cannot restore you to that first brightness. Therefore, be sober and diligent. We will pray with you, but you must yourself be alert. Let your ministry be a work of creation, not of vainglory, and may you always remember that it is God who works in you both to will and to do.
