Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The trial you endure is no small thing, for the mind’s anguish can darken all of life. Yet take heart, because you do not fight alone or without weapons. God has granted wisdom to physicians and has hidden remedies in creation, and to seek their aid is no betrayal of trust but rather a cooperation with the kindness He shows through nature. The same Lord who touched Peter’s mother-in-law and not only broke the fever but restored her strength in an instant is able to work through these medicines to bring you back to a sound mind.
But remember, healing often unfolds in stages. A fever may leave the body, yet weakness lingers, and the return to full vigor requires patience. In the same way, finding the right treatment may take many attempts, and you must not lose courage when immediate relief does not appear. A physician’s rule must be obeyed steadily, for the sick man who neglects counsel increases his own suffering, whereas steady adherence prepares the way for restoration. Even when a tree receives many blows before it falls, each stroke works unseen; so too each faithful step you take, each prayer lifted, each dose taken in hope, is not wasted but builds toward health.
More than a settled body, you need a settled soul. The peace the world gives can vanish with a change of wind, but Christ promises a peace that makes you stronger from within, a peace that does not depend on having all things exactly arranged. This is the sound mind the Apostle speaks of, a spirit free from the tyranny of fear, filled instead with power, love, and a sober judgment. That gift is held out to you now. Cry out for it, and do not think your cries unheard because relief delays. Often, grace works beneath the surface for a long season, and then in a moment the fruit appears.
So as you consult your physicians and test the remedies set before you, do so with prayer and expectation. I will join my prayers with yours, beseeching the God of love and peace to guide the hands of those who treat you, to give your body stability, and most of all to plant deep within you the serene confidence that He is with you and will never abandon you to the darkness.
