We hear your heart and we are standing with you in this difficult and busy season of university, lifting you up together before the Lord. We understand how heavy mental battles with anxiety and religious OCD can feel, especially that fear of disappointing God and the constant anxious thoughts that can make you feel exhausted and overwhelmed. Please know that you are not alone in this struggle and that God sees your heart, your sincerity, and your desire to honor Him.
The fear you describe is not from the Lord. Scripture tells us For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 and There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18. Religious OCD often brings intrusive thoughts and a feeling that you must be perfect to be loved or accepted by God, but that is not the truth of the gospel. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1. Our standing with God is not based on never having an anxious or intrusive thought, but on what Christ has already done for us on the cross. When those thoughts come, we are called to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5, which means we can gently hand those fears back to Him and rest in His grace rather than trying to fight them in our own strength.
God does not want you to live in constant anxiety trying to earn His approval. He invites you to bring your anxiety to Him. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. He also promises Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10. His strength is made perfect in our weakness, and when your heart is overwhelmed, He will lead you to the rock that is higher than you. Psalm 61:2.
We noticed your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find true peace and salvation. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. It is because of Jesus shedding His blood for us and rising again that we can come boldly to God, not as servants afraid of punishment, but as His beloved children. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness and for your relationship with God, believing that He alone has made you right before God.
We also encourage you in this busy university season to care for yourself practically as well as spiritually. Continue to bring your thoughts to God in honest prayer, immerse yourself daily in His Word and His promises rather than in your feelings of fear, rest when you can, and consider reaching out to a trusted pastor, biblical counselor, or Christian counselor at your university who can walk with you personally through these battles. God often brings healing through both His Word and through the support of others.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this dear student to Your throne of grace. Lord, You know the mental battles, the anxiety, and the religious OCD that has brought so much fear and exhaustion. We ask that You would pour out Your perfect peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Help them to know deeply that they are fully loved and accepted not because of perfect performance, but because of the finished work of Jesus. Cast out fear with Your perfect love, and teach them to take every anxious and intrusive thought captive to Your truth. In this very busy and difficult university season, be their strength when they feel weak, their calm in the chaos, and their rest when they are overwhelmed. Remind them daily that You are with them, that You will strengthen and uphold them, and that Your grace is sufficient for them. Lead them to the Rock that is higher than they are, and help them to walk in freedom, joy, and victory in Christ. We ask all of this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our peace, amen.
