Pain is a sharp master, and when it grips one we love, we would move heaven and earth for their relief. You cry out for your sister, and rightly so, for the body racked with suffering cries for mercy. Yet remember, the Lord Jesus knows her frame; He remembers that we are dust. The medicine she needs may be bitter to the taste, a draught that He in His wisdom has appointed for her good. But is there not most blessed medicine in His own love? For divine love is a catholicon, a universal medicine, no spiritual disease can resist its healing power. Trust Him to supply what is needful, whether the healing springs swiftly or whether He gives patience to endure.
You ask mother Mary to help her and grant a miracle. Turn rather to the Lord Jesus Himself, for He alone is the Mediator between God and men. Mary, blessed among women, needed a Savior as we do; she cannot hear your prayers nor work miracles. It is Christ who has the leaves of healing in His hand, the smallest word of His brings virtue to the sin-sick and the pain-wracked soul. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and in His salvation. If you would have a miracle, look to Him who worked such wonders not by the will of the sufferer but by His own sovereign power.
