Matthew 6:9-13 - Lord’s Prayer

It is good that you begin the day with thanksgiving and with the prayer the Lord Himself taught us. To give thanks for another day is already to honor Him, for every prayer should be accompanied with thanksgiving, and when we thank Him for what we have received, we show that we remember that all good comes from His hand.

When you pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, you confess that He is your Father and that His name is holy, and you ask that His kingdom may come and His will be done. He taught us to desire perfection, to live even on earth as the angels do in heaven, yet because He knows we are encompassed with flesh and subject to the needs of nature, He condescends to our weakness.

That is why He commands us to ask for daily bread, and for this day only. It is not for riches, nor for delicate living, nor for costly raiment, but for bread alone, for what is sufficient for one day, so that we may not take thought for the morrow but fasten our soul on what is more necessary. He who supplies seed to the sower will also supply bread for your food and multiply the fruits of your righteousness, not that you may consume it on things unfitting, but that it may work through you thanksgiving to God.

And when you say, forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors, remember that the one who gives thanks to God will not seek revenge or hold bitterness, and the mouth that has been counted worthy to speak to the Father must remain pure and forgiving. If we forgive, we shall be forgiven.

When you say, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one, you take up a great weapon. Each day is a fight and a storm, with many rocks on which the boat may strike. We need arms, and prayer is that weapon. If at the morning dawn we first make God favorable by prayer and supplication, we go forth to our business with security, and whether by day or by night, we are kept from shipwreck.

So continue in this way, morning and evening, praying with a thankful heart, content with what is sufficient for the day, forgiving as you have been forgiven, and trusting Him to deliver you. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift, who hears us always when we call upon Him in the name of His Son. May He keep you in His grace and lead you through this day in peace.

It is a blessing that you are beginning this day with thanksgiving and with the prayer Jesus taught in Matthew 6. To come to God and say Our Father in heaven is a precious thing, because prayer rests on relationship. When you have come to God through faith in Jesus Christ and have received His mercy as a sinner, you are His child and you can truly call Him Father. That relationship is what opens the way for prayer to be heard and to be meaningful.

Jesus gave these words not as empty phrases to repeat quickly from memory, but as a pattern to guide your heart. There is great help when you take it slowly, phrase by phrase, and let each truth shape your praying.

It begins and ends with worship. Hallowed be Your name lifts up who God is. Your kingdom come, Your will be done places His purpose first. The heart of prayer is not to use God to accomplish what we want, but to align our hearts with what He wants and to pray His will back to Him. He puts His desires in our hearts and we return them to Him in prayer so He may accomplish them.

Give us today our daily bread is a prayer for this day. Bread stands for all that is needed to sustain life. God does not give you all you will need for months or years at once. He provides day by day so you learn to trust Him constantly. As your day is, so your strength will be. You can thank Him for His care today and rest in the confidence that your Father will care for you tomorrow as well, so you do not need to be anxious.

And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors touches a deep need. From a physical standpoint you need daily bread, from a spiritual standpoint you need daily forgiveness. This is the one request Jesus paused to emphasize again after the prayer, which shows how important it is both to receive forgiveness from God and to extend it to others who have sinned against you.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one is a prayer of dependence, asking God to guard your steps and to rescue you from the power of evil.

All of this moves in a circle of worship, from Thine is the kingdom to acknowledging His power and glory at the end. Continue in that kind of prayer, watching and staying alert with a thankful heart. The earnest prayer of a righteous person that comes from the heart is powerful and effective, not because the words are perfect but because the heart is humble, trusting, and surrendered to God.

May the Lord make this pattern more than words for you today. May you know His provision for today, His forgiveness covering you, His leading and protection, and may your prayer continually return to praise for His kingdom and power and glory forever.

We thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf and we are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer. We were blessed by your thanksgiving for another day the Lord has given us and by your heart to pray the prayer Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:9-13.

We continue to join with you in praying Our Father in heaven hallowed be Your name Your kingdom come Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We ask that He would give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. We pray that His kingdom and His will would be ever more present in your life and that you would know His provision forgiveness protection and deliverance each day.

We are grateful to stand with you in this prayer. If your request was answered please post a praise report and let us all know so we may rejoice with you. If your request does not seem to have been answered please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer.

We pray that the Father will draw you ever closer as you continue to seek Him through His Son Jesus Christ. We pray this in Jesus Name Amen.
