🙏"Give us our daily bread. Forgive our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For it’s Your Kingdom, Power and Glory Forever, Amen,” Matt 6:9-13, Thank You in Jesus' Name.

We join you in thanking our Father for giving us this perfect pattern for prayer in Matt 6:9-13 and we love how you have seen the beautiful order the Lord Jesus taught us.

You are right to see the two movements in this prayer. First we look upward to the Father before we look inward to our own needs. We begin with His honor, His Kingdom, and His will, saying Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy, your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. This teaches us to seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well in Matt 6:33. When we put His name and His reign and His purposes first, our hearts are rightly aligned for everything else we will ask.

Then second we bring our daily needs, our relationships, and our spiritual protection before Him. Give us today our daily bread reminds us that every good provision comes from His hand and we depend on Him day by day as Phil 4:19 says our God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Then we pray forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. You noted the two sides of forgiveness and that is exactly right. We need vertical forgiveness, receiving mercy from God, and horizontal forgiveness, extending mercy to others. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness in 1 John 1:9, and we are then called to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you in Eph 4:32. Jesus warns us in Matt 6:14-15 that our willingness to forgive others flows from having truly received His forgiveness. And finally we pray bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, asking to be kept from sin and to be rescued from the schemes of the enemy, for we know if we resist the devil he will flee from us in James 4:7 and the Lord is faithful who will establish you and guard you from the evil one in 2 Thess 3:3.

We pray together with you now in the name of Jesus, through whom alone we have access to the Father, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me in John 14:6.

Father, we hallow Your holy name together and we ask that Your name be honored in our lives, in our families, and in this world. Let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done in us on earth as it is in heaven. We surrender our own will to Yours. Give us this day our daily bread, provide for our needs and teach us to trust You for each day. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, cleanse us from all sin and soften our hearts to forgive as You have forgiven us, not holding bitterness or record of wrongs. Lead us away from temptation and deliver us from the evil one, guard our steps, make us watchful and obedient, and keep us from evil. For Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We were grateful to read your note and the way you are lingering with the prayer Jesus taught us. Noticing the order you did, the Father and His honor, His kingdom and His will first, and then our daily bread, our forgiveness and our need to be kept from sin and the evil one, is such a steadying insight.

It is easy to rush through familiar words, so we appreciate the pause you took, that Selah, to let the pattern itself shape your heart. Putting God first does not set our needs aside, it puts them in the right place, held inside His care and rule.

If it is helpful this week, you might try staying with just one phrase each morning and turning it over quietly before the Lord, thanking Him for what it means that day without any pressure to feel a certain way. Over time that kind of simple, regular returning is often how prayer forms us.

Father, we thank You for being our Father in heaven and for drawing us near through Jesus. We thank You for Your holy name, Your kingdom and Your will, and for Your faithful care for our daily needs, Your forgiveness, and Your deliverance from evil. Continue to draw our friend closer to You as they pray and give them quiet confidence in Your presence. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your meditation upon the prayer which our Lord taught His disciples is most precious and most orderly, and I rejoice to join my heart with yours in it.

You have rightly divided it. First, the Father and His honor, His kingdom, His will. Our Lord would have us begin not with ourselves but with God, that His name be kept holy, His kingdom come, His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. This is the holy of holies of prayer, where the Son teaches us to speak with the Father in closest fellowship of love. When the heart is thus set upon the glory of God and the coming of His reign, all other petitions fall into their proper place.

Then second, our need, and that in a blessed order. Give us our daily bread, for every crumb comes from His hand. Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. How sweet is that word, there is forgiveness with Thee, that Thou mayest be feared. It is a divine forgiveness, complete and eternal, not a mere putting aside but a blotting out of the debt for Christ's sake. He not only forgave us at the first, but He continues daily to forgive, and that forgiveness is perfect and abiding. Yet the very prayer that teaches you to ask for mercy bids you say forgive us as we forgive. Unless you have forgiven others you read your own death warrant when you repeat the Lord's prayer, for the remembrance of our own great forgiveness should make us merciful.

And then, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, or as the word is, from the evil one. Deliverance is of the Lord, but He will have us seek it at His throne. Temptation is subtle and Satan watches for the hour of unanswered prayer or fainting faith to cast his fiery arrow, and therefore we are taught to pray daily to be kept from sin and kept from the snare of the adversary. Neglect prayer and you will soon discover that all your spiritual powers wax weak, but he that is mighty on his knees is mighty everywhere. Sanctify them through Thy truth, Thy word is truth, prayed our Lord on the night He gave Himself wholly unto prayer, and so we pray still, that we may be made holy and kept holy for His service.

I will pray with you and for you that the Father who hears in secret will make this prayer living in your soul, that His name shall be hallowed in your life, His kingdom shall rule in your heart, His will shall be your joy, that you shall have daily bread from His table, daily forgiveness through the blood of Christ, and daily keeping from the evil one, for His is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
