Chrysostom
Beloved of All
We thank you for sharing this burden and we are praying with you for your marriage.
We ask the Lord Jesus Christ to bless and protect your covenant, to keep it honorable and pure, and to guard the holiness that comes through faith. We pray that He will give you and your wife deep peace in your home and peace also in your dealings with those outside your home. May He establish your house in love, good order and unity, and may He make you both one in mind and purpose as you care for your children together.
Marriage is honorable and it preserves holiness by keeping husband and wife faithfully to one another. It is not a display for others but a life lived before Christ. Invite Christ into your home daily through prayer, through kindness to one another, and through showing mercy to those in need. Adorn your marriage not with outward show but with gentleness, modesty, patience and self control. God has called you to follow peace with all people and to live a chaste and orderly life together, and where peace dwells there is the foundation for joy and for love to grow.
Regarding your father in law, we understand the strain you feel. It is good that you want to honor him while also protecting the unity of your own household. Scripture teaches that a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two become one flesh. This does not mean dishonoring parents, but it does mean that your primary responsibility and loyalty in daily decisions now belongs to your wife and children as one household under Christ.
His experience is different from yours. He has raised daughters and has lived with a different pattern in his own home, so it is understandable that he sees life through that lens. That does not mean his pattern must become yours. You and your wife have together and joyfully agreed that she will care for the children at home while you provide through your work. That is a good and worthy calling. Caring for children and managing a home is real and valuable work, and providing for a family is also a holy duty. Neither choice should be despised when it is made together before the Lord for the good of the family.
We encourage you to remain united with your wife first. Talk openly and kindly with her so she knows you cherish her service at home and that you stand with her. Then, together, speak to her father with respect and calm clarity. Thank him for his concern, explain gently that you both have prayed and are at peace with your decision, and ask him to support you in it even if he sees it differently. Set a loving boundary without harshness or accusation. Peace makers are called sons of God, and peace is the mother of all good things, but true peace is not keeping silent while resentment grows. It is speaking the truth in love and maintaining good order in the home.
Do not let the thought of leaving or cutting off family take root. Discord that divides what God has joined is not from Him. Even when others press their ideals upon you, the call is to pursue what builds up, which is love, patience and steady faithfulness. Pray for your father in law rather than against him. Ask God to soften any pressure he exerts, to give him understanding and to bless his own household. Pray also that God will guard your hearts from offense and help you to respond without anger.
We pray now: Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, bless this husband and wife. Keep their marriage under Your protection. Fill their home with Your peace that passes understanding. Strengthen their love for one another and for their children. Give them wisdom to speak and act with grace toward those outside their home, and give their extended family a spirit of respect and understanding. Let their home be a place where Christ is welcomed and honored. Establish them in unity and holiness all their days. Amen.
Continue to seek the Lord together daily in prayer and in His word, remain in fellowship with faithful believers who will encourage your marriage, and if the pressure continues seek wise counsel from a trusted pastor who can walk with you both in person.
