Maladaptive daydreaming

Dhitlor

Good and Faithful Servant
Please pray for me to stop maladaptive daydreaming. Pray for others who struggle with it as well. For me (and likely many others), it is rooted in trauma. Thank you.

We hear your honest request and we are lifting you up together before the Lord, and we join you in praying for all others who struggle with maladaptive daydreaming as well. We understand that for you this is rooted in trauma, and we want you to know that God sees the pain underneath the coping, He is not distant from it, and He desires to heal and restore you in truth.

The Word tells us that God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, Psalm 147:3, and that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, Psalm 34:18. We thank God that you have recognized this struggle and want freedom, for that desire itself is God working in you to bring you into wholeness. Maladaptive daydreaming can feel like a refuge from pain, loneliness, or memories that are too heavy to carry, yet God invites us to bring our whole minds and hearts to Him rather than escaping into a world of our own making. We are called to be transformed by the renewing of our mind, Romans 12:2, and to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5.

This is not to shame you, but to gently point out that when fantasy becomes a habitual escape, it can become a stronghold that keeps us from facing reality with God, from processing grief, and from experiencing His true comfort and purpose for us in the present. God wants to be your refuge, not the daydream. He promises that You will keep whoever's mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you, Isaiah 26:3. And we are taught to think on whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, Philippians 4:8. This is an invitation to retrain our thought life with His truth, day by day, by His grace.

We also notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find true healing and salvation. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, for with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation, Romans 10:9-10. It is in His name we can come boldly to God for healing from trauma and for freedom in our minds.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You on behalf of our dear one who is struggling with maladaptive daydreaming rooted in trauma. Lord, You know the wound, the memory, the pain that first made escape feel necessary. We ask You to pour out Your healing and compassion. Heal the brokenhearted places, bind up the wounds, and let Your perfect love cast out fear. Help our friend to cast all their anxiety on You, because You care for them, 1 Peter 5:7. Teach them to take every thought captive to Your obedience, to recognize when the urge to drift into fantasy comes, and to turn to You in that moment in prayer, in Your Word, in worship. Renew their mind by Your Spirit and Your truth. Give them a sound mind, self-control, and Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:7. Break the stronghold of escapism and replace it with Your presence, Your purpose, and real hope for the future. We also lift up every other person who battles this same struggle, many in silence. Bring them comfort, deliverance, and community. Lead each one to safe, godly, biblical support, whether through trusted believers, pastors, or Christian counselors who can help walk through trauma with wisdom. Help them to not isolate but to walk in the light with others. We ask all of this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek Him daily, even in small steps. When you feel the pull to daydream, pause and pray, speak Scripture aloud, and invite God into the moment. Meditate on His Word, keep a journal of truth to replace fantasy narratives, limit triggers you have noticed such as certain music, isolation, or pacing if those are part of the pattern, and seek fellowship with other believers who can pray with you and keep you accountable. If the trauma feels overwhelming, please consider reaching out to a trusted pastor or a biblically grounded counselor who can help you process it safely with the Lord. God is patient with you and He is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in you. Keep turning to Him, for He is your true refuge and He will give you rest for your soul.

Thank you for trusting us with this. We hear how heavy this has felt, and how much you want to be more present in your real life. It makes sense that you named trauma alongside the daydreaming, for many people daydreaming began as a way to find safety inside their minds when there was no safe place around them, and that habit can linger long after the danger has passed. It does not mean you are failing.

We are praying for you and for others who carry this same struggle, that God would bring more peace, healing, and steadiness in the days ahead.

One gentle next step that often helps is to notice with kindness, not shame, when the daydreaming tends to come, times of stress, loneliness, or memories, and to bring that pattern to someone you trust. If this is affecting daily life, we encourage you to reach out alongside prayer to a trusted pastor or Christian counselor, and to a mental health professional if you have access to one, so you don't have to sort through the trauma history alone.

You are not alone in this, and God sees both the pain underneath and your desire for wholeness.

Father, in Jesus' name we lift this dear one to You. You know their story and the hurt that shaped this way of coping. Bring comfort, safety, and wise support around them, and guide them step by step toward healing and greater freedom to live fully in the present. Give the same mercy to all who struggle in this way. Amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

We have heard your request and we carry it with tenderness before the throne of grace. To be held captive by a wandering and preoccupied mind, especially when that habit has been rooted in deep wounds and trauma, is a grievous affliction, and we do not make light of it.

You are right to trace this struggle to a brokenness within, for there are several forms of a broken heart. Some are wounded by sorrow and by the sins of others against them, and the mind seeks refuge in its own inventions because the present is so painful. Know then that the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart. We very speedily care for bodily diseases, but the diseases of the spirit are more pressing, and there is a Physician who has abundant power to heal them. Calvary is the place for the healing balm. The least thing about Christ is healing. As it is written, the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and even His leaf also shall not wither. Those healing leaves change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before.

Let every man know that whatever his strength may be, of body, mind or spirit, if it is his own, it will one day fail him. We need renewing, because in addition to being human, we are imperfect, and the sin that dwells in us drags us down. But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. In renewing your strength, ask the Lord that you may undertake fresh work and that this work may be done to a nobler tune, that you may have more expectancy, more confidence, more faith, more God reliance.

How difficult it is to fix the running judgment and the moving, restless mind that is preoccupied with other things. Therefore take heed how you hear. Bring the whole mind to be fixed upon Christ and His Word. Hear gratefully and prayerfully, and constantly let this process go on in the hearer's mind, What has that truth to do with me. For faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God, and the Lord has linked His healing with His teaching.

We will pray for you, and for all others who are held in this same struggle.

O Lord our God, Sun of Righteousness with healing in Thy wings, look upon this Thy servant who confesses a mind often carried away and a heart wounded by trauma. Thou knowest the sorrows that planted this habit and the weakness that cannot break it. Forgive all sin and heal all infirmity, for pardon and healing are one in Christ. Lay Thy hand upon this troubled mind and lift it up. Give a renewed strength that is not of self but of Thy Spirit. Grant that the thoughts may be brought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and that the affections may find rest not in daydreams but in Thy sure promises. Do the same for all who suffer likewise, that they may find Thee to be their refuge and their healing. We plead Thy nature and Thy promises, for Thou art deeply sympathetic and Thy heart is quick to relieve. Work in them to will and to do of Thy good pleasure, and let the desire to serve Thee arise out of this healing. In the name of Jesus our Healer we ask it. Amen.

Please pray that I will stop maladaptive daydreaming. It has been a habitual problem for me for years and I can't stop it and almost don't even want to because it has helped me escape painful realities. I likely started doing it due to PTSD. Thank you.
