Lust and stagnation

We hear your burden regarding the spirit of lust and stagnation and we stand with you in prayer for deliverance and freedom in Jesus' name. We know how heavy this battle can feel, how lust seeks to entangle the heart and mind and how stagnation can make you feel trapped, unable to move forward in your walk with God, but we serve a God who is mighty to deliver and to restore.

The Word of God is clear that we are to flee from sexual immorality and not entertain it or make provision for it. We are told in 1 Corinthians 6:18 to flee sexual immorality, for every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. And again in 2 Timothy 2:22 we are called to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Lust is not to be managed or negotiated with, it is to be fled from and put to death through the power of the Holy Spirit. God designed sexual intimacy as a holy gift to be enjoyed only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, and any sexual thought, desire, or act outside of that covenant is fornication or adultery and is sin before God. We rebuke that spirit of lust that has sought to hold you captive and we also rebuke the stagnation that keeps you from growing and bearing fruit, for God has not called us to remain stuck but to be transformed and to walk in newness of life. As Romans 12:2 tells us, do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

We also notice that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and power over sin. There is no other name by which we can be saved and delivered. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares, There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not yet fully surrendered your life to Him, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for Romans 10:9 promises that you will be saved. It is through His shed blood on the cross and His resurrection that we receive forgiveness and the power to overcome sin.

We pray together for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this dear one who is battling lust and stagnation. Lord, we ask for Your forgiveness where there has been yielding to lust in thought, in sight, or in deed, for Your Word says in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins, You are faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Create in this one a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within them as Psalm 51:10 teaches us to pray. We resist the enemy on their behalf and we declare according to James 4:7 to submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you. We pray that You would break every chain of stagnation and release them into the freedom and purpose You have ordained. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit so that they may walk by the Spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh as Galatians 5:16 instructs. Empower them to make no provision for the flesh, to guard their eyes and heart, and to fix their mind on what is pure and holy. Let Your power rest upon them so that sin will not have dominion over them as Romans 6:14 promises. Bring godly accountability and fellowship around them, renew their passion for Your Word and prayer, and cause them to bear fruit and move forward in their calling. We thank You for deliverance, for cleansing, and for a renewed mind in Jesus' name, amen.

We encourage you to walk out this deliverance daily by fleeing every source of temptation, by guarding what you watch and where you go, by immersing yourself in Scripture, by fasting and praying, and by bringing this struggle into the light with a mature Christian of the same sex who can hold you accountable and pray with you regularly. Do not remain in isolation or shame, for God desires to bring you into wholeness and to use your testimony for His glory. Keep your eyes on Jesus, pursue purity with all diligence, and trust that He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.

We appreciate you being honest about this struggle. Feeling tangled in lust and also stuck in place can be heavy and discouraging, especially when you want to move forward and find yourself circling back to the same place.

One perspective that has helped many is to think less about trying harder in a single moment and more about training over time. Lasting change is rarely a one time effort. It is more like preparing for a long run, where small, steady practices done faithfully shape us gradually. That can take some pressure off and give you a way to keep going even after a setback.

If it would help, a simple next step could be to choose one or two sustainable rhythms and invite one trusted, mature believer to walk with you. That might be a brief daily time in prayer and Scripture and a regular check in with a pastor or small group for honesty and encouragement. Having consistent support keeps you from carrying this alone where stagnation tends to grow.

We do not see you as defined by this struggle. We see someone who wants to walk more freely with the Lord, and He is patient as He forms you day by day.

Father, we lift up our brother to You. We ask for Your mercy, for clarity where there is confusion, and for strength to choose what is good. Surround him with faithful community, give him wisdom for each next step, and renew his hope as he keeps turning toward You. In Jesus name, amen.

Your cry concerning the spirit of lust and the heaviness of stagnation has been heard, and it is good that you have brought it into the light rather than hiding it in darkness.

Scripture gives the true pedigree of this enemy, that when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death. Any sin, whatever it is, if we cling to it and love it, will bring forth death, rest assured of that. And as you drink on, especially if you drink of the cup of lust, you shall feel another thrill that shall make the very bones to rot and the very marrow to decay. Purity and charity are the two great garments of Christianity, and charity without purity will be of no use, for without holiness no man shall see the Lord. To live under the power of lust is to be held captive, and stagnation is the sure fruit of a heart that is not walking in the way of holiness.

Yet there is deliverance, and that deliverance is solely by the power of God. It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. Deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin. Where we look for justification, there must we also look for sanctification, for as we are justified through Jesus Christ, we must also expect to receive sanctification from a heavenly source. We must look to our heavenly Father, altogether and alone.

Hear the good news proclaimed from heaven concerning those who feel they are going down to the pit, I have found a ransom. God has not only invented a way of deliverance, but He has found a ransom, and it is a gift of Divine Love. The clock of mercy strikes the hour of deliverance because the King's own Son has borne the penalty of all our iniquities. He becomes possessed of a higher nature which was born in him by regeneration and which lifts him up into familiarity with God, so that he becomes a partaker of the Divine Nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. He has delivered us, and that is experimental truth in every regenerated soul.

Therefore let us pray together for you now.

O Lord our God, who alone can bring forth Thy people with power, look in tender pity upon this soul that confesses its struggle with lust and its burden of stagnation. Forgive all sin through the blood of the Lamb slain, for Thou hast found a ransom and deliverance is already accomplished in Christ. Break the power of darkness and the corruption that is in the world through lust. Create a new heart by regeneration, and make this one a partaker of Thy Divine Nature, that purity may be loved and holiness pursued. Lift this soul from the pit and from the place of stagnation, and bring forth with enrichment, with silver and gold of Thy grace, that there may be life and fruitfulness where there has been barrenness. Grant strength to flee youthful lusts and to walk in the way of holiness, looking to Jesus alone for justification and sanctification. Let this affliction become a song of deliverance, that this life may declare, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Keep this soul by Thy Free Grace, that no atom of the honor of deliverance may be taken to self, but all given to Thee. In the name of Jesus Christ our only hope and righteousness, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing this burden so honestly. To name the struggle with lust and the heaviness of spiritual stagnation before God is itself a step toward freedom, and God hears those who come to Him with a humble and contrite heart.

Scripture is clear that God made us for purity and holiness, not for uncleanness. Lust is not a small matter to be managed but a passion to be turned from, and it often travels with its companions like impure talk, careless jesting, and looking at what we should not see. In the same way stagnation often comes from sloth and neglect of the soul. The Lord does not want you to remain stuck, but to grow into maturity in Christ.

God's design for sexual intimacy is good and holy within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and outside of that He calls us to continence and self control. This is not possible by willpower alone, but through new life in Jesus Christ, who alone saves and who gives His Spirit to make us new. In Him we are created anew in true righteousness and holiness.

So I encourage you to take this fight step by step, as one learning letters and then putting them together. Begin with clear decisions to flee what feeds lust. Turn away from pornography, sensual images, and conversations that stir desire. Guard your eyes and your ears, and put away filthy talk and crude joking that lead the heart further astray. At the same time, do not remain idle. Stagnation grows where diligence is lacking. Give yourself to the ordinary means of grace each day, prayer, reading Scripture, honest work, and fellowship with faithful believers who can know you and hold you accountable. Replace old habits with new ones, temperance, purity, faithfulness in small things, kindness and service to others.

Know that deliverance is not always instant removal of temptation, but God promises strength to despise temptation and to walk above it, fixing our hope on the resurrection and the life to come. He is able to make angels of men who were once like horses mad with lust, and He delights to give purity to those who ask.

Let us pray for you now. Father, we come through Jesus Christ Your Son, our only Savior. Have mercy on Your child who is weary of this struggle. Forgive sin, cleanse the heart, and break the power of lust. Lift the weight of stagnation and awaken a fresh hunger for You. Grant continence, temperance, and a love for purity. Teach diligence in place of sloth, and help each small step of obedience to build upon the last. Fill this heart with Your Spirit, that it may be a pattern of a clean life lived for You, and set it firmly on the path of holiness. Lead to trusted brothers or sisters for support and accountability, and keep this soul in Your grace until the day of Your better resurrection. In the name of Jesus we ask this. Amen.

Stay in the light with this struggle. Keep bringing it to God, stay close to His Word, and do not walk alone. If temptation returns, turn quickly to Christ and to a trusted believer. God is faithful to complete the good work He has begun.
