What a beautiful, simple cry of the heart. When the Spirit of God is at work, that is the fruit He produces: love for the Lord Himself. That very desire to say "I love You, Lord" is evidence of His life in you, because we only love Him because He first loved us.

It is vital to know where the foundation stands. Our love is often fickle, changing with our circumstances. There are days when a person can feel unworthy, when the mess of life makes it seem that God must be distant or disappointed. That is why our hope cannot rest on the strength of our love for Him, but on the unshakable reality of His love for us. God demonstrated His love once and for all, not when we were perfect, but while we were still sinners. He sent His Son to be the covering for our sins, taking them upon Himself. When doubts creep in, look to the cross. There you see a love that is constant whether you are good or bad, in sickness and in health, all the way through.

To love the Lord with that kind of gratitude is the sum of what He requires. Everything God has commanded about how to live is summed up in loving Him supremely and loving others. That chief love must be preeminent. Whatever becomes the driving passion of a life becomes its god. So when you say you love Him, you are declaring that He is your God, and the natural, beautiful byproduct of that is a desire to come out from among the clutter of the world and live differently. He is a jealous God, not out of pettiness, but because He knows that anything else we give our highest devotion to will ultimately corrupt us. He calls you a son, a daughter, and asks that no lower love would commit spiritual adultery against that intimacy.

Because God is love, dwelling in that love means God is at work making you like Himself. Worshiping a loving God makes the worshiper loving. Worshiping a holy God makes the worshiper pure. So let that warmth and recognition of His care fill your heart. You aren’t just following a code; you are walking in a living relationship where faith, hope, and love abide, and the greatest is love. Let that love be what defines your life and brings you back to thank Him again and again.
