Your cry, though it be but a few words, has come up unto God, for we read that when Israel groaned under bondage their cry came up unto God, and God heard their groaning. He hears not only framed prayers but the groan and the sigh that cannot shape itself into speech. When you say, Jesus, my Lord, help me, you have prayed indeed, and the ear of the Lord is upon you.
Think of the tender mercy of our God. It was great tenderness on His part to think of His sinful creature at all, and greater still to provide a way of pardon. The Gospel asks of you not great deeds to purchase favour, but that you trust in Jesus Christ, His Son. Mercy pleads with the sinner and says, the grace of God is boundless, so your sin may be pardoned, and the heaven of God is wide, so there is room for you there. When a soul trusts in Jesus, He forgives all sins without upbraiding or drawbacks, and blots them out at once with one stroke of the sacred pen.
Know this, that the mercy of God always flows to men through the golden channel of Jesus Christ. There is one foundation for a genuine hope, and that foundation is Christ. His blood is the reason for mercy when there is no reason in us. God remembered His covenant, and for the sake of His dear Son He delights to show mercy. He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. If mercy comes to you, it will turn your face in the opposite direction and make you a new creation with new loves and new hates, for He will be glorified in your salvation.
Therefore cry on, soul, cry on. While the child can cry it lives, and while you can besiege the throne of mercy there is hope for you. If you cannot frame words, let your aching heart but groan out, My God, have mercy on me for Jesus sake, forgive me, and He will outrun you. He often gives the mercy while we are yet calling, while we are yet speaking He hears us. Do not postpone your acceptance of His mercy, for such delays are not God's delays but ours. And do not look to a thousand places for comfort, but look to God's Word and to Christ Himself, for He has been our help, and in the shadow of His wings we may rejoice.
May the Lord turn your short cry into settled faith. Trust Him now, just as you are, and you shall find that His tender mercy has already gone before you, and will not fail you.
