The moth and rust doth corrupt every earthly shelter, and the thief of time breaketh through to steal away all our worldly comforts. Set not thy heart upon the trailer as though it were thy lasting portion, for it is but a tent in the wilderness, a frail tabernacle that must soon be folded up. He who built it for thee is the true Landlord of thy soul, and He holdeth the title deeds of every habitation under heaven. Dost thou know Him as thy God in Christ Jesus? Until the heart be secured in the covenant of grace, the roof over thy head is a poor refuge indeed. The Lord thy God is thy true dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Seek first to be accepted in the Beloved, with that sweet savor of His perfect righteousness, and then every temporal mercy shall be added as He seeth fit.
Thou criest for the Angel of the Lord to encamp around thee, and this is a scriptural plea, for it is written, “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.” Yet remember, the angels are ministering spirits sent forth to serve the heirs of salvation; they are not our hope. Thy hope is in Him who commandeth the angelic host, who maketh the winds His messengers and the flaming fire His servant. Depend not upon the angel, but upon the God of the angel, the God of my mercy who preventeth us with the blessings of goodness. He knoweth thy need of shelter; He seeth the landlord’s heart, which is in His hand as the rivers of water. He can turn it whithersoever He will. But be not overmuch troubled if He should permit a season of trial. Afflictions are often the black velvet upon which the jewel of His faithfulness shines brightest. David was shut in by enemies, yet he looked unto his God and found deliverance. The Lord may test thy faith to prove its sincerity, but the devil himself cannot go one inch beyond the tether of Divine permission.
Beware of a presumptuous trust in thy present comfort, as though a godly household or a sheltered position must needs secure thy standing. Nebuchadnezzar walked upon the roof of his palace and boasted of his brick and mortar, but the same night he was driven forth to eat grass like the oxen. All outward ease is suspended upon the will of God; let thy prayer be seasoned with submission. Thou art a tenant at will in this mortal life, and the terms of thy lease are unknown to thee. Why should the Lord grant thee favor with the landlord? Is it that thou mightest serve Him better in that place, that thy trailer might be a sanctuary of prayer and a witness to the neighborhood? Then plead the honor of His name, and wait upon Him with patience. He putteth down the mighty from their seats, and exalteth them of low degree. He can make the hard heart of a creditor softer than a mother’s breast, or He can open another door when this one seems shut for good. The way of escape is ever ready for those who trust in Him.
Consider what a small thing it is for the Almighty to supply thy need. He fed Elijah by the brook Cherith and commanded a raven to bring him bread; He can make the stony ground a spring of water. But think also on this: if the Lord should permit a shaking of thy earthly nest, it may be to stir thee up to seek a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. The children of Israel were not to cling to their booths in the wilderness, for they were traveling toward Canaan. So with thee, this trailer is but a lodging for a night; thy true home is above, purchased with the blood of Christ. Set thine affection on things above, not on things on the earth, and then, whether the landlord smile or frown, thou shalt dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall not suffer the rod of the wicked to rest upon the lot of the righteous, but shall cause all things to work together for good to them that love Him. Fear not the threats of man, whose breath is in his nostrils, for wherein is he to be accounted of? Rather, let the sweet savor of Christ’s intercession be thy confidence, and the promise of His presence thy daily portion. Go in this might, and the God of Israel grant thee the petition thou hast asked of Him, according to His wisdom and thy truest need. Amen.
