LORD, FREE MY SPOUSE
FROM THEIR SIN
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Romans 6:11-12
When we hear of marriage problems or a divorce is pending, a stander will often send us their beautiful wedding picture. No one would have thought that this couple would have ended up divorced. What happened?
Many couples did not know the Lord at the beginning of their marriage or during their marriage one or both spouses left God out their marriage. Some couples started their marriage by falling into temptation with their flesh and the enemy had a foothold into their marriage. You or your spouse may have been tempted, blinded, deceived or seduced by the devil, the father of all lies, thinking that playing with sin would not hurt your marriage. There are other men or women who did not know how to love or respect their spouse as it is taught in Ephesians 5 and the enemy caused havoc in their marriages. Any type of sin, not only sexual immorality, can destroy a marriage and hurt your whole family. Will you not give up on your spouse or your marriage? Will you choose to be different? Divorce is not the answer.
Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord of your life now? If you have, you are a new creature in Christ. Your old life of sin is gone, washed away by the Blood of Jesus Christ. You have chosen to live a new life of obedience to your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Now in spite of the cause of your marriage collapsing, the Lord is knocking on your door to stand in the gap for your husband or wife and become a prayer warrior.
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved...For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:1-5, 8-9
Do you know what has happened to your spouse and marriage now? Has the Lord revealed to you the part that you played in your marriage? Is your beloved spouse a slave to their sinful lifestyle? Or is your spouse blinded and deceived by not forgiving you of what you did in your marriage, even though you have repented to the Lord and to them?
What is the meaning of sin? Nelson's Three-In-One Bible Reference Companion states the meaning of sin as: thoughts or behaviors which are contrary to the glory or character of God; to commit an offense against God's laws.
Has your spouse chosen or fallen into sin and darkness in their life? Our world's standards speak of sin as pleasure and sexual immorality as acceptable. What does God say about sin? God sent His only Son to die for every sinner to receive eternal life. I pray that this scripture will encourage you to pray for your spouse or children and for you to walk and live on the narrow road following the Lord Jesus Christ forever. You can turn this scripture below into a prayer for your husband or wife.
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No†to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Titus 2:11-14
I pray that you choose to live a Christ-like life every day. May I warn you that the enemy wants to discourage you with doubt, unbelief or hopelessness. But you need to seek to ...pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22
Seek the Lord daily and make your goal and standard to be that of seeking holiness living. Many people profess to be a Christian, but live and talk like the devil! God knows what you and your spouse are doing every moment and He can see everything.
You, your spouse or your children do not have to be slaves to sin. Will you choose to thank and praise the Lord knowing that there is freedom through Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord from the sins of this world? Will you pray for the salvation of your husband or wife, all your lost loved ones, friends and co-workers? Will you make a commitment to fast and pray for your spouse and all prodigals who are living in disobedience and rebellion? Pray that they will humble themselves to the Lord, setting them free from selfishness, anger, pride, lustful thoughts, adultery, pornography, alcohol, and drugs.
Who can set them free? The Lord Jesus Christ came to this earth and died on the cross, shedding His Blood for every sinner including all prodigal spouses, all rebellious children and loved ones.
Lord, free my husband or wife from their sinful lifestyle or touch and soften their heart of stone quickly in the mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:20-23
You can be a lighthouse for your spouse, loved ones and friends to see the difference in your actions and behavior. Will you choose to be different, dead to sin, but alive in obedience to the Lord which leads you to righteousness? May many prodigals’ hearts and lives be touched, delivered and transformed from their sinful lifestyle every day of the week. Then may God get all the glory, honor and praise!
