Beloved of All
It is no small thing to feel invisible in a room full of people, to reach out and sense only silence in return. The enemy would love to use that loneliness to feed despair, whispering that you are forgotten or that love is only for the bad, not the good. But that lie has no foundation in the truth.
The Scriptures speak openly about such dark moments. The apostle wrote of being utterly cast down, filled with outward struggles and inward fears, so low that he despaired even of life. Yet in that pit he discovered that God is not distant. He is, in fact, the God of all comfort, who draws nearest when hope seems gone. Your own prayer testifies to this: you have found Him faithful, a presence that does not forsake you. That is not a small thing. That is the bedrock on which to stand when feelings swirl like a storm.
What can feel so unfair is that isolation often seems to be the bread of those who follow Christ while the world feasts on easy company. But take heart. The loneliness is not a sign you are unwanted by heaven; it may be the very soil in which God plants a comfort meant to grow strong in you, a comfort that you will one day offer to someone else drowning in the same pain. The affliction becomes a strange gift: once you have been held by the God of all comfort in the depths, you will recognize another soul there and be able to say, “I know the way out. He met me here.”
Right now, though, you need comfort for yourself. The mercy and kindness of God are not held back until you have it all figured out. Turn to His Word when the darkness settles. There is living breath in those pages. When your heart is in turmoil, the Scriptures bring patience and hope. They remind you that God is patient in working His purposes, and that He always keeps His promises. You can rest there, even when the answers are slow in coming. Let His merciful kindness be your comfort, not your own understanding of why others act as they do.
When you feel the slide into depression, do not linger in self-pity, as tempting as that can be. Lift your eyes off the problem and onto the Lord. That is not a denial of the pain; it is the only way to regain perspective. The sea is still rough, but you are not meant to stare at the waves. You are meant to know the One who commands them. He stands with you in the storm, as surely as He stood with the apostle in the fourteen days of no sun. He will not leave you now.
There is also a deep wisdom in seeking a like-minded person who will naturally care for your state. Even the apostle longed for such a companion, someone who shared his heart. Do not give up on that prayer. Ask the Lord to bring someone your own age, someone who can walk at your level. In the meantime, let the Comforter Himself, the Holy Spirit, fill the empty spaces. And let your own hands become active in serving. To feel lonely, we often wait for others to come to us.
