You ask God not to let you despise the day of small beginnings, and rightly so. But do you truly reckon what a small thing can become when it is rooted not in human zeal but in the Spirit who raised Christ from the dead? You mention Zechariah: the eyes of the Lord run to and fro to show Himself strong for those whose hearts are committed to Him. That promise is sure, but it searches the inner chambers. Is your heart fully committed, or do you trust partly in plans and partly in prayer? The Spirit of grace and supplication is not poured out on the self-sufficient. Those who think they have no need of the prayers of others are the ones most in need. Even Peter, that pillar, did not say, "What need have I of prayer?" while the Church prayed earnestly for him. And you, while you labour to compel souls to the wedding feast, must first be compelled yourself by the love of Christ, daily dying to that subtle pride which makes a man think his outreach stands by his own diligence.

You fear excuses, heat, rain, a field to inspect, a wife to attend. But the heart that seeks ease will always find a field or an ox. The true battle is not against the weather, but against that sleep of the soul which treats the work of the Gospel as a light thing. Do you understand what is at stake? We are not playing a game; we are snatching souls from the fire that has no end. Do not calculate by the short moment of sin that the punishment is brief. You pray for the word to prevail and for sound conversions like Zacchaeus. Such conversions are born in travailing prayer, not in passing words. When you say, "Let the love of Christ compel us," see that it is a fire kindled first in the closet at dawn. If in the morning we have made God propitious by prayer, we go into the marketplace of souls armed; without that, the day is shipwreck. The early Church did not grow because they met often, but because they met as a house of prayer, not a den of thieves trafficking in their own reputations.

Therefore, ask yourself: do you desire more meetings, or do you desire God? If your heart is fully His, He will draw the multitude. But if you let the meetings increase while the prayer that pierces heaven grows thin, you will have crowds but no stars that shine forever. Keep asking for the Spirit of supplication, but begin by confessing that even your asking is weak unless He kindles it. Labour to have Christ formed in you first, then in them. The wise win souls not by eloquence but by being so near to the heart of the Bridegroom that their very presence compels others to come in. Do not let the evil one snatch away the seed through distractions that seem lawful. The love of Christ compels when a man sees that he is already dead and his life is hid with Christ. Go forth, then, not despising the day of small things, but trembling that even the small thing requires the strength of God, and rejoicing that He is ready to show that strength in those whose hope is wholly in Him.

You are on the right track, and the hunger you describe is itself a work of the Holy Spirit. That longing to see the prayer gatherings grow, to see souls saved, and to press through discomfort and distraction, these desires do not originate with the flesh. They come from the Spirit who already lives within you.

What you are really asking for, beneath every specific request, is a fresh outpouring of love. Not a gushy, sentimental feeling that rises and falls with circumstances, but the love of God Himself poured into your hearts. That is the agape love, the self-giving, divine love that hung on a cross for sinners while we were still enemies. When Paul wrote about the gifts of the Spirit and the great manifestations of power, he stopped to show a more excellent way. He explained that without this love, even the most spectacular gifts and the most heroic sacrifices amount to nothing. The same is true of an outreach. You can schedule meetings, you can battle the weather and overcome every excuse, but if love is not the animating force, the work will become a hollow routine.

The Holy Spirit has already been given to every believer. There is no need to wait for Him as though He is distant. The question is whether He is being allowed to fill and overflow. And when He fills, the first and surest evidence is love. Love for God with a fervency that rekindles first devotion. Love for one another that bears burdens and restores gently. And love for the lost that compels you out of a life of self-interest into a life lived for Him who died and rose again.

Consider the excuses in Luke’s parable. A piece of land, a new team of oxen, a marriage, none of these were evil things in themselves. But they became reasons to refuse the great invitation. What broke the pattern was not a lack of time but a lack of love for the host. When your heart is captivated by the love of Christ, those same daily concerns will still exist, yet they will lose their power to choke the word. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Living to please Him becomes the most exciting adventure, and you wake up with anticipation for what He will do next.

That is how you will not despise the day of small beginnings. You are not building something by might or human ingenuity. The Lord is looking throughout the earth for hearts fully committed to Him so that He can show Himself strong. He will draw people, He will bring conviction and sound conversions, and He may even grant attesting signs, all from a center of love. The Spirit who is the Spirit of grace and supplication will teach you to pray with groanings that cannot be fully uttered, aligning your intercession with the Father’s will. He will create in you a burden for souls that is not a heavy, grinding duty but a reflection of His own longing over the lost.

Let love be your aim. Walk in it. Serve one another through it. That is the fulfilling of the law, and that is the path where the Word of the Lord will prevail in your lives and in your city. The enemy has a tactic for every day of prayer and outreach, but he has no answer to believers who are rooted in the love of God in Christ Jesus. From that love, nothing in all creation can separate you. Let it compel you, and it will compel others to come to the wedding feast.

We are so encouraged by your heart for prayer and evangelism, and we have been lifting up your request before the Lord these past days. It is a joy to stand with you in agreement, asking God to strengthen these small but vital gatherings—not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit, just as Zechariah 4:6 declares. We have prayed that the eyes of the Lord would watch over your efforts, that He would draw hearts to Himself, and that the love of Christ would compel you and your team to press forward with boldness and compassion.

We have asked the Lord to pour out His Spirit of grace and supplication upon you, that your burden for souls would grow deeper and your labor in prayer and outreach would bear lasting fruit. We have interceded for protection over your meetings, that nothing—whether distraction, discouragement, or opposition—would hinder what God is doing. And we have prayed that the Word of the Lord would prevail in your midst, bringing repentance, transformation, and even signs of His power, just as it did in Ephesus.
