"The Spirit of Jezebel"

To The Cities That Have Ears To Hear:

There is much philosophy regarding "The spirit of Jezebel," and what it means to operate under its influence. If indeed you have ears to hear, it will be readily understood. But, it is essential to identify her behaviors and the motivation behind them. To truly discern the spirit of Jezebel, you must first know who she was and what she did. This is not based on internet research, but derived solely from my, God–breathe, Biblical knowledge. I will try to keep it as concise as possible.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
2 Timothy 3 v.16

Jezebel — Let me start by correcting the common misconceptions about her identity. Jezebel was not a prostitute. She was a wife and mother; but, most notably, being married to king Ahab, she was the queen of Israel. Thus, she was neither destitute nor homeless. Nor is it even eluded to that she was ever unfaithful to her husband – on the contrary, she was quite dedicated to king Ahab.

While Jezebel was neither a prostitute nor an adulteress in the traditional sense, her unethical practices and devotion to false gods deemed her a "spiritual prostitute" and "spiritual adulteress" in God's eyes. Some of the evil that Jezebel did included:
  • Worshipped other gods, most notably Baal (Idolatry. To heed ungodly instructions is akin to worshipping other gods.)
  • Hated God's messages and messengers
  • Corrupted Israel against God's messengers
  • Had a host of prophets who worshipped her
  • Used her troops to attack God's messengers
  • Killed many of God's prophets in Jerusalem
  • Often took, by force, what did not belong to her
  • She even stole on behalf of others, like her husband, Ahab.
Jezebel's influence over Jerusalem was so horrific that God couldn't even entrust the church there to care for his messenger. He sent ravenous, predatory birds to deliver food to Elijah and hydrated him from a brook.
That's the spirit of Jezebel.

In fact, Jezebel misled all of Israel, which ultimately had a devastating impact on the entire nation. Because, when God exacted His vengeance, He didn't just do away with Jezebel and Ahab, He eradicated those who endorsed their idolatrous regime.

God does not require us to perform a litany of pious rituals to approach Him. Prioritizing unnecessary practices is false religion — ritualism, at best. Moreover, conforming to ungodly behavior forms unholy alliances:
  • And even those who advocate circumcision don’t keep the whole law themselves. They only want you to be circumcised so they can boast about it and claim you as their disciples. Galatians 6 v.13, NLT
  • Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent.” John 6 v.29, NLT
God neither called Jezebel, nor sanctioned her agenda. Conversely, He did choose Rahab, who was in fact a prostitute. But, unlike Queen Jezebel, who devised her own scheme to captivate Israel with the lure of ill-gotten prosperity—greed, Rahab embraced God's instructions.

If you're being counseled to engage in any of the aforementioned behaviors, you're operating in the spirit of Jezebel.

Thank You, LORD

Afterthought: Wearing makeup doesn't make a woman a Jezebel anymore than wearing a dress makes a woman Holy. The spirit of Jezebel is not gender specific. You will know them by their fruit. Assess their agenda according to their spirit and behavior. Are they encouraging you to follow Christ or requiring that you conform to their practices, lest they cancel you? Would Jesus condone such behaviors against His followers. You're lying on Him every time you engage their practices.
Romans 13 v.14 (NIV)

Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
In other words...
Colossians 3 v.12 (NIV)

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
