The prayer you offer is of the utmost urgency, for a soul hangs in the balance. You ask that the owner might submit to God’s voice and surrender his life and will to the Father, and this is the very pinpoint of all true conversion. No man is ever saved until he yields, until he throws down the weapons of his rebellion and cries, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” Submission is wormwood and gall to the proud heart, yet must he drink that cup or die. Plead with him, then, as one who knows the terrors of an unsaved estate, that he may no longer, like stout-hearted Pharaoh, demand, “Who is the Lord that I should obey his voice?” but rather, brought to his senses by sovereign grace, bow unconditionally at the feet of Jesus.
Tell him that salvation hinges upon the will of God, not upon his own stubborn resolve. Let him dream not that he can resist the Almighty and prosper; if he does not submit to God, he will never resist the devil, and he will remain under that tyrant’s power. Which shall be his master, God or devil? The whole scheme of redemption from first to last depends upon the absolute will of God, and well is it so, for if the work rested upon man’s fickle choice, no flesh would be saved. Yet the Lord’s command goes out, “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth,” and with the command comes the grace to obey. Spur him to look at once, for sin will be removed the moment he looks. Christ Jesus is God’s salvation; let him take the Lord in his arms by faith, and he shall find peace.

You ask us to pray that this landlord would submit to God's voice and surrender his will to the Father. We do pray this fervently with you, and yet I must also speak plainly. What good is it if we merely utter words, unless we understand the weight of that voice? The Father spoke from heaven, “This is my beloved Son.” If God Himself testifies to the Son, then to submit to the Father’s voice is to yield every thought and desire to Christ. And this is no light matter, for the Scriptures warn that the Son has been given authority to execute judgment. The one who hears His voice and obeys passes from death to life; the one who scorns it will answer for every transgression. Pray, therefore, not with a faint wish, but with a holy fear, knowing that the soul of this man hangs in the balance.
Yet let no one imagine that surrender is forced or grievous. Our Lord “emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant,” not by constraint but by His own free will. This is true humility: to choose subjection for the sake of love. When you pray that the landlord submit his will, pray that he may grasp this mystery, that losing his life he finds it, that bowing low he is exalted. The Father’s commandments are not burdensome; they are the path to comfort and mercy. For God is the “Father of mercies and God of all comfort,” and He desires not the death of a sinner but that all turn and live.
But I charge you also: do not merely pray. If you have any standing with this man, demonstrate by your own conduct the sweet liberty of serving Christ. The Apostle teaches us to “subject yourselves one to another in the fear of Christ.” Let him see in you no insolence or self-will, but a joyful yielding to God’s order. Perhaps he will be won without a word as he beholds your quiet submission. Yet even if he resists, persist in prayer, for the voice that called Lazarus from the tomb can pierce the stoniest heart.
Take courage: the Father’s testimony concerning His Son is sure. He who gave us the right to cry “Abba, Father” will not fail to draw those for whom Christ died. Let us then call upon Him without ceasing, that this landlord may learn to say with all the saints, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” Amen.

The Lord simply told him, “Return, and I will be with you.” In that anxious moment, the word of God became his anchor. We pray that your landlord hears that same kind of call: not a harsh demand, but the loving summons of the Father who wants to lead him into safety. God often speaks through circumstances, even the discomfort of a tenant’s prayers, to unsettle our false peace and make us ready to listen.
The perfect picture of surrender is Jesus in the garden: “Not my will, but yours be done.” He laid down His life so that we might have life. When anyone truly submits to the Father, denying self and following Christ, there is a glorious promise attached: the Lord will manifest Himself to that person.
