Your prayer for your wife and for the work of God in her heart has been heard, and we join our prayers with yours. You have asked rightly, that the kindness of God would lead her to repentance, for as it is written, it is the goodness of God that leads to repentance, and that He is patient, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
We must understand what true repentance is. There is a sorrow of the world that works death, and there is a godly sorrow that works repentance unto salvation, a repentance which brings no regret. Worldly sorrow is grieving for loss, for shame, for the consequences in this life. Godly sorrow is grieving for sin itself before God, and it bears fruit in amendment of life. The Scripture shows us both. The harlot who washed the feet of Christ with her tears and wiped them with her hair was moved by such godly sorrow, and being warmed by repentance she was carried by love toward Christ and was made more honorable than many, and her outward tears showed an inward fire which God alone beheld. On the other hand Esau sought the blessing with tears, yet he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears, because it was not true repentance. His grief did not turn him from his purpose, for he still intended to slay his brother Jacob. So tears alone are not repentance. True repentance condemns the sin and turns from it.
Therefore we pray with you not only for tears or for emotion, but for that godly sorrow which leads to a real turning, to humility and to coming to her senses, as Nebuchadnezzar was humbled until he lifted his eyes to heaven and reason returned to him, as the prodigal came to himself in the far country, as Hosea's wife was hedged in that she might return. Before honor comes humility, and God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. We ask Him to humble gently and to restore fully.
You have planted and others have watered, and this is good and right. One plants, another waters, but God gives the growth. The seed is the Word of God, and the Word does not return void, but like rain and snow that water the earth, it accomplishes the purpose for which God sent it. The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, judging the thoughts and intents of the heart. The Holy Spirit convicts of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. Our part is to continue to sow faithfully, to speak truth in love, to show the kindness of God, and to trust Him for the increase. He who began a good work will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ.
The delay of God is not neglect but mercy, giving space for amendment. Even Manasseh, who had filled the city with pollutions and abominations, after long and great wickedness washed away all his offenses by repentance and consideration. So no amount of past sin puts a person beyond the reach of repentance when the heart truly turns. The Church is a spiritual bath which wipes away not filth of the body but stains of the soul by its many methods of repentance, and that bath is open still.
For your own part, continue as one who is meek and merciful and a peacemaker. He who is called to be poor in spirit and to reconcile others, how shall he cast out his own wife. Let your life show the same kindness you pray for her to receive, forbearing, praying, ordering your steps faithfully and leaving vengeance and judgment to God. Let your home be ordered by the Word, holding fast that marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that children are a heritage from the Lord to be raised in the nurture and instruction of the Lord. Pray for her to embrace that holy calling of godly mothering not as a burden but as a grace.
We thank God that you are hearing His Word and that you desire His glory alone. Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory, for from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. We pray that He will bring others across her path to water what has been planted, that He will restrain evil and deception, that He will keep you and your household and all who have heard the Word from the evil one, and that He will cause what has been sown to bear fruit, some thirty, some sixty, some a hundredfold, for salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb. May fervent prayer offered in faith avail much, and may God reward your diligent seeking as you ask in the name of Jesus, who is the Amen, the faithful witness, in whom all the promises of God are Yes and Amen.
