Then David sent to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house, seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house. Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh, wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king.
And it is written a little after, And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man, so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants.
You see the case. Judah, who should have been first to welcome their own king, for he was of their tribe and their flesh, was hesitating and backward while others were ready. David therefore by wise and gracious words inclined their hearts to bring him back to Jerusalem and to his throne.
And herein is a picture for our own souls. Our King, the Son of David, the Lord Jesus, who is just and having salvation, cometh unto us in mercy. He does not force an entrance but He bows the heart. As it is written, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, and His rule is to welcome all, saying, Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. The question comes home to each of us, Why should we be last to welcome back the King. Others have welcomed Him and found Him to be all their salvation, shall we linger.
If you have any fear of His absence or any hope toward His coming, that very fear and hope will make you welcome Him when He draws near. He waits to be gracious. Come and welcome, and give Him a hearty welcome in return, for He has opened a fountain for sin and for uncleanness, and He is married unto His people in mercy. Let your heart be bowed even as one man to say, Return, Lord Jesus, and reign over me, and you shall find Him ready to teach you and to receive you without casting you out.
