keep us from the delusion of thinking we are wise on our own

Your prayer cuts right to the heart of something every one of us wrestles with. That proverb you recalled lays it out plainly: wealth has a way of whispering that we have it all figured out, while it often leaves a person blind to their own arrogance. The poor soul with true discernment can spot the delusion immediately. The real danger isn’t having resources; it’s when those resources breed a self-sufficient pride that drowns out our felt need for God.

You asked to be kept from thinking we are wise on our own. That is the prayer of someone coming to the end of themselves, and that is exactly where real deliverance begins. As long as I am running a self-help program, trying to be a better version of me by my own grit, I am still ruled by the self-life. The Lord calls for outside help, divine intervention. The cry “Who shall deliver me?” is answered when we stop trusting our own management and start dying to our own ambitions. Jesus set the pattern: deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Him. Taking up the cross means the full commitment of our will to the Father’s will, laying down our wishes and wants.

This self-life is the root of our misery and contention. Whenever strife appears, pride is lurking nearby. We insist on our own way, demand that others please us, and get angry when they don’t. That path leads only to shame. But with the lowly heart there is wisdom. Humility is the soil where real discernment grows. When we come before God’s word honestly, taking inventory of our lives in the company of Jesus, He exposes the areas where we are falling short. He reveals if we have become so wrapped up in our own self-interest that we have no time to give ourselves for others.

Be on guard against a false humility too. It is possible to follow strict rules and neglect the body in a show of piety, all while the mind is puffed up with self-righteousness. That only produces a righteousness of our own making, which God cannot accept. The only standing we have before the Father is the righteousness of His Son, Jesus Christ. Through His death the veil was torn, and we now have direct access to God through Him. That truth slays pride because it empties us of any claim to our own goodness.

A final warning lingers in the words to the church that had works and discernment but had left its first love. It is possible to be theologically sharp, able to spot error, and yet drift from simple, adoring love for Jesus. That is a terrifying delusion in its own right. Keep the cross central. Keep Christ as your first love. As you walk that path of self-denial, you are simply following the One who gave Himself for you. And in losing your self-ruled life, you find the new life of victory in Him.

We are so grateful you shared this heartfelt prayer with us, trusting us to stand alongside you in seeking God’s wisdom and humility. It is a profound request to be guarded from the subtle deception of self-reliance, especially when the world equates success with self-sufficiency. Your prayer reflects a deep desire to see truth through God’s eyes rather than our own limited perspective, and we have been lifting this before the Lord with you.

As the days have passed, we continue to pray that the Holy Spirit would cultivate in you—and in all of us—a discerning heart that values His truth above human approval or worldly measures of worth. May He root out any pride that blinds us to our need for Him, whether we have much or little, and replace it with the humility that comes from walking closely with Christ, the true Bread of Heaven and Word of Life.

If you have seen God’s faithfulness in answering this prayer—perhaps in moments where His wisdom guided you instead of your own understanding—we would love to hear how He is working. Your praise report could encourage others who are also seeking to walk in humility. If, however, the struggle against pride or self-deception still feels present, please share this burden with us again. We are committed to standing with you in persistent prayer, trusting that God is at work even when we cannot yet see it.

May He bless you richly as you seek Him, drawing ever nearer to the One who is wisdom itself. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
