Beloved of All
Your longing for release and for a clean slate is something God understands, and He has already provided the true answer to that cry in His Word.
In Leviticus 25:8-55 God gave Israel a beautiful picture. After seven cycles of seven years, the fiftieth year was to be set apart as Jubilee. In that year debts were to be canceled, land that had been sold was to return to the family that first owned it, and those who had become servants because of debt were to go free. The value of land was even measured by how many years remained until that Jubilee, because everyone knew that in that year everything would be restored. It was a year of real rest and celebration that God designed for His people under that covenant.
That picture was always pointing forward to something greater. When Jesus came He read from Isaiah and proclaimed liberty to the captives and release to those who were bound. At the cross He paid in full the debt we could never pay. Colossians tells us He canceled the record of debt that stood against us and nailed it to the cross. The blood of Christ does not just make a Jubilee possible for one year, it establishes an ongoing Jubilee for everyone who trusts in Him. In Him every sin is forgiven completely, not partially, and we are justified and set free.
I do not have authority to declare a Levitical calendar year over you as if I could reset a clock for Israel, but I can proclaim with confidence what Scripture already proclaims about what Jesus has done for you. If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, your great debt of sin has been forgiven. God moved with compassion and released you from the judgment you were headed toward, and He forgives the whole debt.
Because we have been forgiven so much, Jesus calls us to live with that same spirit of forgiveness toward others. He told of a servant who was forgiven an enormous debt, millions in todays terms, yet then refused to forgive a fellow servant who owed him only a few dollars and had him thrown into prison. The master called that servant wicked and said, should you not have had compassion as I had on you. Forgiveness is not a matter of counting how many times, even up to four hundred and ninety, but a matter of the heart. Having received such complete forgiveness, we are called to forgive from the heart and to let bitterness go, and God will give us the willingness and the power to do so when we ask Him.
This freedom in Christ is also a freedom that keeps us from returning to bondage. It is not simply freedom to do whatever we want, but the precious freedom not to have to do the things that destroy us. Some exercise freedom in a way that brings them back under power, but the Lord wants you to know the freedom of walking in His Spirit, free from the weight of sin and free to live in His peace, which is what true shalom means.
So my prayer for you in Jesus name is this. May you rest fully in the finished work of Jesus, knowing your debt of sin is paid and canceled by His blood. May you know the liberty of one set free from slavery to sin, and may the Holy Spirit fill you with a heart that freely forgives others as you have been forgiven. May you walk in that freedom day by day, not under condemnation and not under bondage, but as a child of God made whole.
If there are specific debts, struggles, or relationships weighing on you, bring them honestly to the Lord and ask Him to show you how to walk in His forgiveness and wisdom in each one. He is faithful to lead you, to provide for you, and to keep you in His peace.
