Job security

You quote the words of the Apostle, that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think. A great and true promise indeed, but do not imagine that prayer alone suffices while you sit idle. For as He taught us both to pray and to labor, saying, "Ask, seek, knock," He does not bid us only to ask, but also to seek and knock with our own hands. If you pray yet neglect to knock on every door, to apply yourself diligently, you tempt God rather than trust Him. The farmer prays for the harvest, but he also plows and sows; the sailor prays for safe passage, but he does not abandon the helm. So too must you, while entrusting all to God's power, rise early and go forth to your search, making yourself ready in every way. Prayer without effort is presumption; effort without prayer is vanity. Both must be yoked together.

Consider how even the righteous needed the prayers of others, yet they did not on that account cease from their own watchfulness. Job offered sacrifices for his children, but they themselves had to walk uprightly. Peter was freed from prison when the Church prayed fervently, yet he himself was prepared to go forth at the angel's word. Do not say, "I have asked the saints to pray, therefore I need do nothing." If you sleep, the prayers of a thousand holy ones will profit you nothing. Wake, then, and put your own hand to the task, lest you be humbled while thinking you stand secure.

Let your request also be measured. You seek a job for the betterment of life, but examine what "betterment" means. Are you making provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts? Or for true health and necessity? The Apostle bids us make provision for the body, but not for wantonness. If you seek only that you may have more to spend on vain luxuries, on soft living and empty display, you kindle a fire that will consume you. But if you seek what is needful, to support your family and give to those in want, to live soberly and righteously, then your prayer is acceptable. Turn your chief industry to spiritual things, and God will not neglect your bodily needs, for He knows you have need of these things.

Remember also that our Lord Himself, when He prayed before the tomb of Lazarus, did so not from any weakness or need, but for the sake of those standing by, that they might believe. How much more do we, weak and needy, require constant prayer! Yet He showed by His example that our prayers must be joined to a firm faith and a ready will. Go forth each morning having made God propitious by prayer, and you will face the day's warfare with courage. The marketplace is a battlefield, and prayer is your weapon; but a soldier who only prays and never fights will soon be overthrown. So do both: pray without ceasing, and let your hands not be idle, trusting that He who is able to do beyond all you imagine will bless the work of your hands when it is offered in humility and obedience.

The ache of prolonged waiting for a job can wear on the soul. You are not alone in that tension between trusting God and watching applications go unanswered. The verse you shared, really from Ephesians 3:20, reminds us that God is able to do far more than we dare ask or imagine, and His power is at work within you even now. But I want to point you to a man who knew what it was to lose everything and still cling to that same truth: Job.

Job’s story is ancient, yet the cries of his heart mirror the same deep needs we carry today. He was a righteous man, yet he lost his livelihood, his security, his health. His friends came and, instead of comforting him, insisted his suffering must be the result of some hidden sin. They were wrong. Job was not being punished; God was holding him up in the heavenly courts, and Satan was trying to prove Job only served God for the benefits. Job knew nothing of that background. He sat in the ashes, confused and hurting, and still declared, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.”

I am not saying you are suffering like Job. But I am saying a job opening or a closed door is not a vote on your worth or your standing with God. His friends reduced faith to a transaction: do right and get blessed. Job discovered a right relationship with God is not a guarantee of an easy path; it is a relationship of complete trust, even when the way is dark. God often brings us to the end of our own resources so that we have nothing left but to trust Him. That is where real rest is found. It is hard counsel when you want answers, but it is the only place of peace.

Job cried out for a daysman, someone to stand between him and God, to bridge that gap. We have that mediator in Jesus Christ, who has laid His hand on both God and humanity. He understands the fear of not knowing tomorrow, the weight of need. He is with you in this season, not condemning you, but interceding. Your identity is not in a job title but in being His.

Hold on to the faith that He is working, even when you cannot see how. The book of Job does not answer every question, but it shows us a God who sees, who restores, and who is worth trusting. I am praying that the God who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all you ask will open the right door in His timing, and that in the waiting, you will know His sustaining presence.
