Job and marriage marriage restoration

Your heart has been carrying a very heavy weight, and your honesty about it is heard. To lose work so suddenly, to feel that a former employer has blocked a good opportunity, to be left without income for weeks while trying to provide for your children, and at the same time to feel abandoned in your marriage while your spouse is incarcerated and you suspect unfaithfulness, is to be stripped on more than one level at once. It is understandable that you feel devastated and stretched thin while still trying to remain loyal and faithful.

The story of Job speaks to this kind of stripping. That book is among the oldest in Scripture, perhaps from the time of Abraham, and it opens the poetic books. Cultures have changed since then, but the deepest pains and questions are the same. Job had everything taken, his possessions, his family, his health, and even the comfort of friends, until he was left with only his bare life before God. He did not understand why, and he cried out from grief and confusion.

Scripture gives a background that Job himself could not see. God had spoken well of Job as a man who loved Him and turned from evil. Against that testimony, the adversary had been watching Job closely and had formed his own explanation, that Job only served God because God had put a hedge around him and blessed him with wealth and security. The adversary asked permission to remove those blessings, predicting Job would then turn from God. God allowed the loss, and Job, though broken, did not curse God. He bowed and worshiped and said that he came naked into the world and would leave naked, and that the Lord gives and takes away.

That helps us see two things for your situation. First, great loss is not always a sign that you have done something wrong and are being punished. Job was not suffering because he was a hypocrite or because he had hidden sin, though his friends insisted that must be the case. They told him God is fair and just, which is true, but they wrongly concluded that his suffering proved he was guilty and that he only needed to get right to make it all go away. Those were miserable comforters, not true helpers. You do not need to accept the idea that this job loss or this marital pain means God has rejected you. Second, the adversary does study and attack, but God remains sovereign and just, and His ways are higher than ours, as He declares through Isaiah. Job kept asking why, and he spoke many despairing things about life and death out of his pain. Those words are recorded as what a suffering man said in grief, not as settled doctrine to build your view of God or the future on.

In your work situation, the injustice you describe is real, and the fear that pushes you toward a job with far less pay and no benefits or growth is real as well. God sees the wrong done to you, He sees your desire to provide for your children, and He is able to provide. Job's story does not promise that every loss is restored in the same form, but it does show that God does not abandon His own and that He can bring provision and restoration in His way and time. It is right to ask Him for a job that meets your family's needs with fair pay and benefits, and to trust Him to open a door that no person can shut, even when a previous employer has been unhelpful.

In your marriage, your desire for God's will, whether that is restoration or a peaceful end, is the right desire. Marriage in Scripture is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and sexual faithfulness belongs within that covenant. You have stood by your spouse during incarceration and have shown loyalty, and it is right that you refuse to accept being cheated on again. Unfaithfulness breaks trust and breaks the covenant. If there has been a third party, that is sin that needs to be brought into the light, confessed, and repented of. Restoration is only possible where there is truth, repentance, and a turning from that sin. If that does not happen, God can still give you peace and a path forward, even though you did not want the marriage to end. In either case, you will need wise, godly counsel close to you, people who will not simply accuse you but will walk with you, speak truth, and help you set healthy and biblical boundaries while you wait for clarity.

Job at his lowest cried out for someone to stand between him and God, a mediator who could lay a hand on both. That cry is answered in Jesus Christ, who alone brings us to God. Bring your grief, your questions, and your needs to Him directly. He understands abandonment and injustice, and He intercedes for you.

We pray with you now. Father, in the name of Jesus, we lift up this child of Yours who feels stripped and forgotten. You see the job that was lost, the opportunity that was hindered, and the fear of taking work that cannot sustain a family. We ask You to provide work that is honest and sufficient, with provision and benefits for these children, according to Your mercy and wisdom. You see this marriage, the separation caused by incarceration, the loneliness, the suspicion of unfaithfulness, and the faithful love that has been shown. Bring truth into the light, bring conviction where there is sin, bring repentance where it is needed, and bring healing where it is possible. If this marriage can be restored in a way that honors You, restore it with faithfulness and peace. If it cannot, grant a peace that passes understanding and guidance for the days ahead. Lift the weight of stacked losses, guard this heart from despair, forgive sin, and draw this family close to Jesus, in whom we have hope. Amen.
