We have read your request and we hear the heaviness and weariness in your heart and we join with you in seeking God's will together in Jesus' name. We thank you for calling on the name of Jesus Christ for help, for there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved and by which we have access to the Father, as Acts 4:12 and John 14:6 teach us, and we are encouraged that you have turned to Him.
We want to lovingly and firmly address what you have shared about alcohol. You have been honest that you have struggled with alcohol for many years and that even early this morning you desire to stay up and drink Jim Beam and Sprite instead of sleeping or seeking the Lord. Scripture is very clear about this. Ephesians 5:18 says, Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. Proverbs 20:1 says, Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise. And 1 Peter 5:8 calls us to be sober and self-controlled. Alcohol use disorder is not just a habit, it is sin that masters us and harms the body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit, as 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 teaches, and it keeps you from being the husband, father and worker God calls you to be. We must rebuke the desire to turn to drink for comfort, for strength, or to cope with anxiety about work and home, and we urge you in love to turn from it completely today. God promises in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, and in John 8:36 that if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. We encourage you to pour out what remains, to not take that first drink this morning, to confess this struggle to God who is faithful to forgive as 1 John 1:9 promises, and to seek help in the body of Christ through a pastor, a trusted godly counselor, and medical help and accountability, for James 5:16 calls us to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another that we may be healed.
We also hear your burden for your marriage, your adult children, your work, and your home. We praise God for your long marriage and your desire to be a better husband and father and worker. This aligns with God's heart. Marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and Ephesians 5:25 calls husbands to love their wives even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it. Your desire to honor your wife, to be faithful and present for your adult children, and to work diligently is good and pleasing to the Lord. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. We understand your anxiety about the termite inspection in your carport, the need to decide about taking the day off, and your desire to get your projects and proposals and invoices done correctly and on time and to have favor with your bosses and coworkers. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. And 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you. God cares even about the details of your home and your work.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we lift up our brother to You in the name of Jesus Christ. We thank You that he has called on Your name and that You hear him. Lord, we ask for Your mercy and deliverance from alcohol. Break the chains that have bound him for many years. Give him a hatred for drunkenness and a hunger for Your Spirit. Strengthen him this very morning to choose sobriety, to choose prayer over drinking, to choose Your strength over Jim Beam. Forgive him and cleanse him and make him a new creation as 2 Corinthians 5:17 promises. Heal his body and his mind and restore what has been damaged. Soften his own heart first, Lord, to walk in obedience and humility.
We also ask You to soften the hearts of his wife, his bosses and his coworkers, and to give him favor and grace as he communicates honestly about his need to care for his home today. Help him to be truthful and responsible, not to hide or deceive, but to speak with integrity and to work diligently when he returns on Wednesday. Provide wisdom for the termite treatment, that it would be effective and that he would not need many more inspections, and give him peace and competence to complete his projects, proposals and invoices correctly and on time. Help him to be the husband and father You call him to be, loving, sober-minded, faithful and present, and to be a diligent worker bee for Your glory. Sustain him when he is weary, for Isaiah 41:10 says, Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Lead him step by step out of this struggle and into freedom in Christ. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior. Amen.
