Here is the original text:
Your earnest and broken prayer has been heard, and I thank God that He has inclined your heart to cry to Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior in this hour of need. You have not spread your griefs to the pitiless sea nor to the winds, but to the ear of a gracious God who will move His arm to work deliverance for you. There is hope in this, that you come as a sinner desiring to be laid at His feet, and His own word is, Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.
First let me speak to you of forgiveness, for that must come before healing. You ask, Please forgive me, and you desire to be a better person, a better husband, a better servant in your daily calling. Hear the blessed whisper which God has given to troubled souls, There is forgiveness with Thee. It is a divine forgiveness, I even I am He that blotteth out thy transgressions, and it is a surprising forgiveness and a complete forgiveness. Though you feel the hardness of your heart and the sinfulness of your past life, though alcohol has brought its bondage upon body and mind, there is forgiveness for whatever your sins may have been. If you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ who died the Just for the unjust that He might bring us to God, and if you trust Him alone for salvation, you may have even the chief of sinners forgiveness, and God can bestow it now. Do as Luther did when in dark distress and say with the Creed, I believe in the forgiveness of sins, and believe it for yourself. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance, He never plays fast and loose with men, and the forgiveness He gives in Christ is an eternal forgiveness.
And after forgiveness comes healing and deliverance. You ask Him to heal your insides, your liver and stomach and heart and mind, and to help you and your wife to be delivered from this bondage of strong drink. We have a far richer theme for song than Deborah had of old, for we have been delivered from worse enemies and saved by a greater salvation. The Lord Jesus is mighty to save and mighty to deliver from the archers that beset you. He who forgave the palsied man and then bade him rise and walk is able to forgive you and then to strengthen you to walk in newness of life. Cry to Him not only for pardon but for power to forsake the cup that has mastered you. This deliverance will be His work, and you must seek it of Him daily, for the act of forgiveness is a continuous one and He continues daily to forgive and daily to keep.
You speak also of great anxiety about your work, your projects and proposals, and the fear of withdrawal tomorrow. Our Savior says, Do not be so affected by external things as to get into a state of worry and fretfulness and distress. I have never discovered that anxiety has comforted anybody, or that it has brought any grist to the mill, and the very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. Be prudent and diligent in your calling, do your work faithfully as unto the Lord to help your bosses and coworkers and customers, but cast your care upon Him, for He careth for you. Tell the Lord about your anxiety rather than telling yourself about it. Seek also wise and godly help for your body in this struggle, for the Lord often works through the means of physicians and counselors and the care of His people, and do not face this trial alone.
I will pray with you and for you and for your wife, for the Lord would have you both delivered together.
O Lord our God, with whom there is forgiveness that Thou mayest be feared, look in mercy upon this dear soul who confesses his sin and his infirmity. For Jesus Christ's sake blot out his transgressions and let him know the certainty of full and present forgiveness. Lay Thy healing hand upon his body, upon liver and stomach and heart and mind, and restore what strong drink has wounded. Give deliverance from craving and from fear, and keep him in the hour of temptation tomorrow at his work. Grant clarity of mind and steadiness of hand to do his projects and proposals correctly and on time, and take away distracting anxiety that he may be still and know that Thou art God. Have mercy also upon his wife, and bring you both out of bondage into liberty, that you may help one another and build up your home in holiness. Make him a new man in Christ, a faithful husband and a diligent worker, walking henceforth in sobriety and love. This we ask through Jesus Christ our only Savior, in whom there is forgiveness now and forever. Amen.
Go on hoping and expecting both forgiveness and healing at the feet of Jesus. Trust Him, turn from the sin that ensnares you, seek the fellowship and counsel of faithful believers who will walk with you, and let your life henceforth show the fruit of that grace which first forgives and then makes whole.
