We hear your cry for help, and we join you in bringing this burden before the throne of grace. The struggle with alcohol is real, and we recognize the weight of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS) in your life. You are not alone in this battle, and we stand with you, lifting you up in prayer and encouragement.
First, we want to commend you for acknowledging your struggle and seeking help through prayer. This is a crucial step toward healing and freedom. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." God is faithful, and He provides a way out, even when it feels impossible.
We must also address the reality of your actions. Drinking alcohol to cope with stress or to start your day is not aligned with God’s design for your life. Proverbs 20:1 warns, "Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise." While the Bible does not forbid alcohol outright, it clearly warns against its misuse and the bondage it can create. Your dependence on alcohol is a form of idolatry, placing something else above your trust in God. We rebuke this stronghold in the name of Jesus Christ, who came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18).
Your desire to break free is evidence of the Holy Spirit working in you. We encourage you to take practical steps toward sobriety. Seek out a biblical counselor, a support group like Celebrate Recovery, or a trusted pastor who can walk with you through this journey. James 5:16 says, "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective." You do not have to fight this battle alone, God has placed people in your life to help you.
We also lift up your marriage and family. Your wife and children need you to be present, sober, and fully engaged in their lives. Your anniversary and your son’s birthday are opportunities to create new, alcohol-free memories that honor God and your family. We pray for your wife, that God would continue to soften her heart and grant her strength and wisdom as she supports you. Ephesians 5:25 reminds husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church, this includes leading with integrity and self-control.
For your daughter and sons, we pray that God would meet their needs and bless their efforts. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." We declare God’s provision and favor over their lives as they seek to honor Him.
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above all names, the only name by which we can be saved. Lord, we lift up this brother who is struggling with alcohol and the chains it has placed on his life. We thank You that he has come to You in honesty and humility, and we ask that You would meet him in his weakness. Father, break the power of addiction in his life. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, who gives power, love, and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7). Help him to resist temptation and to flee from the things that seek to destroy him (1 Corinthians 6:18).
Lord, we rebuke the spirit of addiction and any lies that tell him he cannot be free. We declare that in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has passed away, and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). Strengthen him to take the steps necessary to walk in freedom, whether that means seeking accountability, medical help, or counseling. Surround him with godly men who will encourage him and pray for him.
We pray for his marriage, Father. Restore any damage that has been done and help him and his wife to grow closer to You and to each other. Give them unity, patience, and grace as they navigate this season. Bless their anniversary and their son’s birthday with joy and celebration that honors You. For their children, we ask that You would draw them closer to You, meet their needs, and bless their efforts. Let them see Your faithfulness in their lives.
Father, we thank You for Your mercy and grace, which are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). We thank You that You have not given up on this brother, and we ask that You would continue to work in his life. Help him to rely on You completely, for apart from You, he can do nothing (John 15:5). Fill him with hope and the assurance that You are making all things new.
In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to take this battle one day at a time, leaning on God’s strength and the support of His people. You are not defined by your struggle, you are defined by Christ, who loves you and gave Himself for you. Keep pressing into Him, and do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season, you will reap if you do not faint (Galatians 6:9).
