How often we fix our eyes upon the mercies that flutter away like sparrows, and so forget the hand that opens wide with eternal bounty! You have laid hold of a true cordial for the soul in this word from the palm-bearing psalm. To give thanks because He is good, and because His mercy endureth for ever, this is to drink from the fountain and not merely from the streams. The goodness of God is not a shifting shadow; it is the very sunlight of His being. And His love, ah, His love!, it is not a summer brook that dries when the heat comes, but an unfathomable sea, without shore or bottom, the same yesterday, today, and for ever.

I would have you sit down and consider the first blessings He has already given, those spiritual blessings in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. You have asked for bread and He has given you the living Bread. You have cried for mercy and He has washed you in the fountain filled with blood. The new heart He promised in the covenant, has He not put it within you? The stony thing that would not melt at the sight of the cross, He has taken away and given you a heart that feels, that loves, that grieves over sin. And with that new heart has come a gratitude that is no forced hymn, but the natural breath of the renewed soul. The love of God shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Ghost is a spark of the eternal flame, and you do well to fan it into a blaze of thanksgiving. This gratitude is not a garment to wear only on feast days; it is the daily livery of every blood-bought heir of heaven. When the Spirit gives us a sense of this, a morsel of dry bread becomes a royal banquet, and every trial is seen to be dealt out in weight and measure, not in anger but from His dear covenant love.

The request breathes a desire to thank God for who He is, and this is the very heart of worship. To glory in His attributes, to adore His unchanging love, this is the music that delights the ears of the King. And the sweetest note in that music is the name of Jesus, for in Him all the attributes of God meet and harmonise. The love that endures for ever has written its signature in crimson upon the cross. When my soul was under a sense of deadness, it was the sight of that cross that melted me. I thought on His sacrifice without gratitude, and then the truth broke in: He loved me and gave Himself for me. That thought, applied by the Spirit, turned my grumbling into song. This is what makes the love of God not a doctrine to be admired but a home to dwell in. You cannot separate the love of God from the person of Christ; in Him it is embodied, in Him it is made sure to the believer. Hold fast to this: nothing can sever you from that love. The evils of the day, the temptations of the hour, the howling of the dog of hell, none of these can break the bond. For the covenant is ordered in all things and sure, and the blood of the everlasting covenant seals it forever.

Let your gratitude therefore run out toward the people of God. She who was raised from her fever ministered to Christ and to His disciples; so let your love to the Master overflow in kindness to His lambs. A thankful heart is a generous heart. It sees the image of God in the poorest saint and seeks to wash their feet. And do not forget the perishing world. The love that has been so patient with you yearns over the prodigal and the wanderer. Let your gratitude compel you to declare the name of the Lord in Zion, to speak of His praise when the people are gathered together. The most powerful preacher is the one who can say, "I was dead, and He quickened me; I was blind, and He gave me sight." Tell it out, then, among the family and the neighbours, that His mercy endures for ever.

Go forward, then, with this string always upon your harp: "His love endureth for ever." When the purse is lean, when the body aches, when friends forsake, when death creeps near, still give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness. For you have a treasure that moth and rust cannot corrupt. The world's fleeting comforts are like the grass that withers, but the Word of our God stands for ever, and that Word has pledged itself to you in Christ Jesus. You rightly call us to thank God not only for what He does but for who He is. The refrain is true: His mercy endures forever. Yet take care that your thanksgiving not remain only upon the lips, for the mouth that blesses God but the hand that grasps greedily that which belongs to another is a foul thing. True gratitude is proved by a life worthy of the gift.

He who thanks God for his own blessings must also learn to give thanks for what he suffers, for then he will not seek revenge, but will love even his enemies and so become like the Father who makes His sun rise on the evil and the good. Do you wish to glorify Him? Then live so that others may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. What senselessness it is when some empty their silver into privies while the poor stand hungry around the very church!

This is not to give thanks; it is to mock the goodness you profess. Let us then give thanks in deed: pour out your abundance upon those in need, keep the body pure from every stain, and put on love, which is the bond of all perfection. The love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, a gift greater than heaven and earth. To preserve that gift requires earnest diligence after baptism.

So let your gratitude be a daily sacrifice, a life that reflects the unchanging love of the One who gave His Son, and in loving one another well, you will remain in Him and He in you.

Your prayer overflows with a grateful heart, and that is exactly where God wants you to live. Thanksgiving that is anchored only in what God gives can be shaken when the gifts feel absent. But when thanks springs from who God is, his goodness, his love that endures forever, it becomes immovable. His love is not a cautious, weighing sort of love that keeps a ledger. It is agape: the giving, self-emptying love that held nothing back. The cross stands as the eternal proof. When the enemy whispers that your circumstances mean God does not care, you look there. You see how much he loved you. You were not bought with corruptible things, but with the precious blood of Christ. That is your unshakable reason for gratitude.

This is why Paul could urge believers to give thanks in everything. That is impossible if you only read the surface of your situation. But when you trust that a loving Father is weaving all things for your good, even the hard threads become places to discover his mercy. God’s blessings on your family are not a wage for your performance. They flow from his grace, from a covenant rooted in his own faithfulness. He has already given you every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies in Christ. As you walk in that reality, you find a deeper worship that isn’t chasing the next blessing, but resting in the Blesser himself.

And this same love that has landed on you will begin to work outward. The love God has poured into your heart is not selfish; it doesn’t vaunt itself or envy what another has received. It is a pure, fervent love that can rejoice when someone else is promoted, when another needs generosity, when a hard relationship demands sacrifice. As Christ loved you and gave himself for you, so you learn to walk in that same giving love among your own household and beyond. The world often redefines love as something grasping or merely reciprocal, but you have a far better Teacher. Keep thanking him not only for the good things you can see, but for the eternal love that will never let you go. He is good, and his mercy endures forever, this is solid ground for every day ahead.
