Your reflection on Psalm 140:6 captures the heart of the verse so well. David is not stating a general truth about God, he is making a personal confession of ownership and trust. To say You are my God is to place every part of life under His authority and to declare that He alone is the source of help and hope.
That declaration belongs in every area of life, not only in moments of distress. We are called to say You are our God over our daily decisions and our deepest anxieties, over our homes and work, over our relationships and our future, over the things we understand and the things that confuse us. True prayer is not trying to get our will done on earth, but opening our hearts to get His will done. He makes His purpose and plan known to us, and as we respond in prayer we open the door for Him to do what He has desired to do, which He will not force against our will. We often limit Him by praying only for what we think is reasonable or ideal, but His thoughts and plans are larger than ours. Learning to say You are our God means we stop confining Him to our expectations and instead trust His perfect will to be done.
This verse encourages us to turn to God at any time because it shows that He hears the cry for mercy. When we come to Him we do not come asking for justice, which would be getting what we deserve. We come asking for mercy, which is not getting what we deserve, and for grace rooted in His loving kindness and tender compassion. His paths are mercy and truth to those who keep His covenant, and He is full of compassion, gracious, long suffering and plenteous in mercy. His mercy endures forever, it is as high as the heavens and without limit, so we never need to fear that we have used it up or that He has grown tired of hearing us.
We can come with confidence at any moment because God is for us and not against us, and because we have one mediator between God and man, Jesus Christ. He has touched God and He has touched us, so through Him we can touch God. In Him mercy and truth have met together and righteousness and peace have embraced. He is the Bread of Heaven and the living Word of God who invites all who are weary and burdened to come and find rest. Through His sacrifice the way is open for us to approach God freely and to know that our cries are heard.
So let this verse shape a daily habit of prayer. Take time to worship and to reflect on who He is, to bring your own needs in petition, and to intercede for others. Even when circumstances have not yet changed, like David still pursued and still in danger, prayer can bring assurance and comfort by the Spirit and end in confidence and victory because you know the Lord is your strength, your defense and your refuge. He is the God who performs all things for you and who sends His mercy and truth from heaven. As you keep declaring You are my God and crying out for mercy, you will find that He hears, He answers according to His good will, and He surrounds you with His unfailing love.
May the Lord give you an undivided heart to trust Him fully, to praise Him with your whole heart, and to experience again and again how great His mercy is toward those who call upon Him.
