You are feeling the pressure of unjust hands, hemmed in by men who seem to have forgotten that there is a King in heaven. I do not wonder that your heart cries out for health and for clearer sight, both in body and in the tangled thicket of your affairs. When the eyes grow dim and the frame is weary, every burden feels twice as heavy; but take this for your comfort, your true health does not hang upon the approval of any manager, nor upon the swiftness of an earthly discount. It is bound up with a far better thing.
Picture a little myrtle grove down in a hollow, quite hidden from the casual eye, watered by unseen streams. The world thinks nothing of it, yet it flourishes because the Lord walks among the myrtles. That is the Church, and that is every soul that trusts in Christ. You may be overlooked and pressed, but you are not overlooked by Him. The very men who contend with you are only permitted to go so far, and not a hair further, than the King allows. When the Scriptures promise, “Your eyes shall see the King,” it speaks of a vision that steadies the heart long before the eyes are satisfied with the sight of His face. You see Him now by faith, see Him as the blessed and only Potentate, who carries the keys of all things at His belt, and who suffered men to handle Him roughly for a season that He might be a merciful High Priest to you. That same Jesus is your health. I do not mean only the health of your body, precious as that is, but the health of your whole being, spirit, soul, and body, restored, balanced, and kept in sacred sanity by His indwelling life. When you ask for improved vision, remember that the best sight is the eye that beholds the King in His beauty, even when the mists of trouble roll in. Physical sight is a mercy; spiritual sight is a treasure that no corruption can snatch away.
As for the discount and the paperwork, and the men who press you, think of it as a love-letter delivered in a black-edged envelope. The message is not the injustice of the envelope, but the kindness of Him who sent it. Your Saviour knows all about the matter, and He will not suffer your foot to be moved beyond what He means for your good. He stands at your right hand as the great High Priest, and when the accuser points to your flaws, your Lord says, “Take away the filthy garments, and clothe him with change of raiment.” Your standing before God does not depend on the outcome of this dispute, for you are already accepted in the Beloved. Justice shall be yours, not because you are strong, but because your Advocate is unanswerable. In His own time He will clear your name, or He will give you something better than a cleared name, a quiet and patient heart that can leave the matter entirely with Him.
Do not dread that these managers can really harm you. They are but men whose breath is in their nostrils; but your Jesus is the Lord of angel armies. Pray for them, as you have done, and leave their salvation and their correction to the only wise God. He is justified when He speaks, and clear when He judges. Your part is to keep looking unto Jesus. In that look is health; in that look is peace; in that look is the sure foreshadowing of the day when every press of injustice shall be lifted and you shall be satisfied.
Now I commend you to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. Lord Jesus, be vision to these dim eyes, strength to this weary frame, and a swift and righteous defender in this tangled trial. Let this dear soul know, beyond all doubt, that no one can contend with a child of God and prosper, because You are their shield and their exceeding great reward. Cover them with Your mighty blood, and give them the peace that passes all understanding, until the day breaks and the shadows flee away. Amen.
