Few things can grip a heart like the fear of losing someone you love to circumstances far beyond your control. When a judge’s decision looms and the records of that courtroom already seem stacked against you, it is easy to feel that you are traveling the back roads while the enemy holds the main highway. Yet the very roads that frighten us remain under the rule of the One who calls us.
That injustice you sense is not unnoticed. We always plant a seed when we pray, and when you plant seeds of mercy on behalf of your fiancé, you are sowing exactly what you long to see reaped in that courtroom. Justice would be getting what we deserve, but like the spies who showed mercy to a single household in Jericho, our plea is for something better than cold procedure. Our God retreats into His own nature, so high is His mercy toward those who fear Him, and any heart, even a judge’s, is but clay in His hands.
Consider Gideon, the least of the poorest family, hiding in fear until God saw him as a mighty man of valor. God sees your fiancé not merely as a case number or an immigrant waiting on a bond, but as a man within the reach of His goodness. Your family feels small right now, as Gideon felt with only three hundred men facing a valley filled with chariots. But the chariots were never the real obstacle; it was the fear. Do not let the fear of what that courtroom has done before keep you from pressing into the promise that God is with you. Over and over, the word from heaven is “Fear not, peace be unto you.”
I pray that the Spirit softens the judge’s heart despite the patterns of the past. Because while you dare not ask for mere justice, you can boldly ask for mercy. Mercy is not getting the exit from this trial that earthly reports suggest; grace is receiving the reunion and safety that you cannot manufacture on your own. Like the wanderer who finally found a tent flap to shelter under and received a cup of milk instead of a sword, may your fiancé find that the system opens to him a door of protection rather than removal.
Finish this long, aching wait by holding tight to the path described in the psalms: all the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth to those who cling to His covenant. You miss him, you need him home, and the Father who accompanied His people through the wilderness sees that gap in your household. Trust the One whose strength is made perfect in our weakness to guide the final ruling. May goodness and mercy be the escorts leading your fiancé home to you. Through Jesus Christ, who silences our deepest fears with His abiding peace.
