We hear your heart’s cry for clarity and direction, dear sister in Christ. It is beautiful that you are laying this decision at the feet of Jesus, for He alone knows the plans He has for you, plans for hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). The fact that you are seeking God’s will first is a sign of wisdom, for Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."
First, let us address the foundation of your decision. Marriage is a sacred covenant designed by God to reflect Christ’s love for the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). Therefore, the man God has for you will not only be a good provider and of good character but will also be a man who loves the Lord with all his heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37). His faith should be evident in how he lives, speaks, and prioritizes God’s Word. A godly man will lead you closer to Christ, not away from Him. He will honor you as a fellow heir of the grace of life (1 Peter 3:7) and will be committed to building a marriage that glorifies God.
Here are some signs to help you discern if a man is from God:
1. His Relationship with God: Does he have a vibrant, personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Does he spend time in prayer and the Word? A man after God’s heart will prioritize his walk with the Lord (Psalm 1:1-3). "The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." (Proverbs 9:10).
2. His Fruit: Jesus said, "By their fruits you will know them" (Matthew 7:16). Does his life bear the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)? Is he humble, teachable, and quick to repent when he falls short?
3. His Vision for Marriage: Does he share your biblical values and vision for marriage? Is he committed to the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong covenant? Does he honor God’s design for intimacy, reserving it for marriage alone? "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers." (Hebrews 13:4).
4. His Leadership: Is he a man who leads with godly wisdom and servanthood, as Christ did? Does he take initiative in spiritual matters, such as praying with you, studying the Word together, and encouraging your growth in Christ? "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it." (Ephesians 5:25).
5. His Treatment of You: Does he respect and cherish you as a daughter of the King? Does he honor your boundaries, both emotionally and physically? A man who truly loves you will not pressure you into compromising your purity or your walk with God. "Let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband." (Ephesians 5:33).
6. Peace and Confirmation: Does your spirit bear witness with his? Do you have a deep sense of peace when you consider a future with him? The Holy Spirit often confirms God’s will through a sense of peace and alignment with Scripture. "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15).
Now, let us rebuke any confusion or emotional turmoil that may be clouding your judgment. The enemy seeks to distract and deceive, especially in matters of the heart. We must guard our hearts diligently, for "the heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). Do not rely solely on your feelings or the opinions of others. Seek God’s face and His Word above all else.
We also encourage you to seek godly counsel from mature believers who know you well and can offer wisdom and prayer support. Proverbs 15:22 says, "Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established." Share your heart with those who will speak truth in love and point you to Christ.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for Your faithfulness and love. We lift up this dear sister to You, asking that You would grant her clarity, wisdom, and peace as she seeks Your will for her life. Lord, You know the plans You have for her, a hope and a future. We ask that You would reveal to her which of these men is the one You have prepared for her to walk alongside in marriage.
Father, we pray that You would remove any confusion, doubt, or fear from her heart. Give her a spirit of discernment to recognize the man who will lead her closer to You, honor her as Your daughter, and build a marriage that glorifies Your name. Guard her heart from deception and help her to trust in Your timing and Your ways.
Lord, we ask that You would speak to her clearly through Your Word, through prayer, and through the counsel of godly believers. Let her hear Your voice above all others, and give her the courage to follow where You lead. If neither of these men is the one You have for her, we pray that You would close the door gently and open another that leads to Your perfect will.
We also pray for these two men. If they are not the one You have chosen for her, prepare their hearts for the wives You have for them. If one of them is the man You have ordained, draw them closer to You and to each other in a way that honors You.
Father, we thank You for Your promise to guide us when we acknowledge You in all our ways. We trust that You will direct her path and bring about Your perfect plan for her life. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Sister, remember that God’s timing is perfect. Do not rush this decision, but wait on Him with patience and trust. Continue to seek Him first in all things, and He will not fail to lead you. "Delight yourself also in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart." (Psalm 37:4). Walk in faith, knowing that He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).
