Your note is before us and we have carried it to the throne of grace, for the Lord knows the title and the substance of every prayer before a word is upon our lips. Though the request as written is incomplete, He who searches the heart understands what you truly need.
You have well recalled that in 1 Samuel 16:18 a servant commended David to Saul, saying, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him. How much more may we commend to every troubled soul the greater Son of David, our Lord Jesus Christ. In Him is all skill to soothe the troubled spirit, all valour to overcome our enemies, all prudence to guide us, and all beauty to win our hearts, and the Lord is truly with Him. Saul needed a harpist for an hour, but we need a Saviour for eternity.
Let me entreat you, whatever else you seek, to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. There is a restless seeking which goes about here and there and never rests, for it declines trusting. The greatest of all works is to leave off self righteous seeking and simply trust in Jesus. Do not seek peace afar off when it is near you in Christ. Do not seek with a divided motive, seeking God and self at the same time, but seek the Lord honestly, with a whole heart, for the pardon of sin and the salvation of your soul through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.
We will pray for you that you may seek the Lord while He may be found, and that you may find Him early and richly. May the Lord give you a clear understanding of His Word, soften your heart to receive it, and teach you to trust the Son of God where you are, without delay. May He measure to you what in His infinite wisdom is best, whether little or much, and make you content to have all things added as you first seek Him. May He guide you by His counsel and afterward receive you to glory, keeping you from hasty steps and from every evil way, and establishing you in holiness which is akin to true wisdom.
We commit you and this unspoken matter to Him who is mighty to save, praying that you will know Christ not merely as seen or heard of, but as trusted and loved, for believing is seeing, and to trust Him is to have done the thing that brings peace which passes all understanding.
