Isaiah's endurance was a testimony to God's enabling grace, for His grace is sufficient and His strength is made perfect in weakness as taught in 2 Corinthians 12:9.

His obedience, even when it was uncomfortable and must have drawn scorn from others, shows us what it means to be fully surrendered to the Lord's will. We are called to trust that God will not ask us to do something without providing what we need to accomplish it.

The question you have put concerning the prophet Isaiah is one which has exercised many minds, and the Scripture itself gives us the substance of the answer though not every particular.

We read in Isaiah chapter twenty, verses two and three, that the word of the Lord came to Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot. And the Lord said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia.

You ask how he endured the cold of winter. The Scripture does not tell us by what outward means he was preserved, but it does tell us that he obeyed. And herein we learn what I have often pressed upon you, that obedience is the highest practical courage. To persist in scrupulous obedience may need more courage than even the martyr evinces when once and for all he gives himself to be burned. In Isaiah's case full obedience to the Divine command involved innumerable difficulties, yet he turned not from it to the right hand or to the left, for the exactness of obedience is the very essence of obedience.

You must also understand the force of the word naked as the Hebrews used it. It does not always mean utter nakedness as we understand it, but the laying aside of the outer garment, the mantle of the prophet, the sackcloth which marked his office. So Saul is said to have lain naked among the prophets, and Peter is said to have been naked when he was fishing, yet each had his inner garment. Isaiah was stripped to his tunic or loincloth, exposed and humbled, made a living sign to Judah that as he walked so should Egypt and Ethiopia be led away captive, barefoot and stripped by the Assyrians. Whether he so walked continually day and night for three whole years, or whether he appeared thus at seasons as a public testimony, the text leaves open, but in either case it was a hard and humbling obedience.

How then did he stay warm. He that bade him go barefoot was able to keep him. What are the trials you are expecting. Rely upon your merciful God to bear you through. He who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows can preserve His servant in the winter's frost when that servant is in the path of duty. The Lord twice says, I will, and His promise is sure. Trust your merciful God to help you. The prophet trusted not in that which is seen and touched, but in the invisible Jehovah, who alone is the living and true God.

If the Lord calls a man to a hard service He will bear him through it. The path of obedience is generally a middle path, and it is often a rough one, but obedience rewarded is obedience refreshed. As those women who ran to bring His disciples word found Jesus Himself meeting them in the way of obedience active, so shall every obedient soul find Christ near to sustain and to cheer.

Take then this lesson for yourself. You may never be called to such a sign as Isaiah, but you are called to wholehearted and complete obedience, the obedience of a child, not of a slave, the obedience of love, not of terror, the obedience of faith, not of dread. Trust Him so as to obey Him in all that He has commanded you. If any present trial seems cold and bitter, trust your merciful God to bear you through it, and you shall find His commandments are not grievous and that obedience to them will yield to you the peaceable fruits of righteousness.

What it does show is the meaning of that obedience. The prophet was given as a sign against Egypt and Cush, that those who trusted in them would be led away stripped and barefoot. For that sign he laid aside the outer garment, which is what the prophets mean when they say naked, perhaps retaining only the inner tunic or sackcloth, and he went without sandals. Even so it was a true hardship, exposed to heat and to the cold of winter nights, and a shame in the eyes of men.

Yet to be so stripped for the sake of obedience is no disgrace. Adam was naked in paradise and was not ashamed, and Isaiah being naked and barefoot was more glorious than all around him who were clothed in costly garments. Joseph also when he was stripped shone forth the more. The glory is not in the garment but in the obedience.

How then did he endure. He learned obedience by the things which he suffered, and was made perfect through sufferings. This is the way God perfects his servants, not only to believe but to endure the same sufferings with patience, for the work of salvation is shown not in doing evil but in suffering evil with willingness of mind while grace works within. A long suffering soul becomes impenetrable, and like a spark falling into the deep is quenched, so every hardship falling upon such a soul soon vanishes and does not disturb it.

The Lord who sustained him is the same who himself hungered and was naked and wandered, and who once would not allow his disciples to have shoes at all, to teach them not to seek comfort but trust. He is able to keep those whom he commands. Whether by the mildness of that land, by such poor covering as remained, or simply by his sustaining power, Isaiah was kept through that long obedience so that the word of God might be seen and heard.

Therefore do not look first for how the body was warmed, but for what the soul was taught. If God should call you to any hard obedience, he will also give the endurance, and the endurance itself will display and increase your training, and make your faith more glorious than any outward comfort.

Your question about Isaiah is a good one and it comes from Isaiah chapter 20. There God told the prophet to take the sackcloth from around his waist and to take the sandals from his feet, and Isaiah obeyed and walked barefoot and stripped down.

God then explained why. He said that just as His servant Isaiah had walked in that barefoot and stripped condition for three years as a sign and wonder against Egypt and Ethiopia, so the king of Assyria would lead away the captives of Egypt and Ethiopia in that same way, young and old, exposed and barefoot to their shame. The whole point was a living prophecy. The people were tempted to trust Egypt and Ethiopia to rescue them from Assyria, and God was showing through Isaiah what would actually happen to those nations.

When the Bible uses the word naked in this place it does not necessarily mean completely without any covering as we might picture it today. In the language of that time it often meant stripped of the outer garments and left only in the inner tunic, the way a prisoner of war would be led away, or the way Peter is described as naked when he was fishing and had stripped to his undergarment. Isaiah removed his outer prophetic garment of sackcloth and his sandals and walked in that humbled, prisoner like condition.

Scripture does not tell us how he stayed warm in the winter or how he endured the heat of summer and the rough roads on bare feet for that long period. The focus is not on his comfort but on his obedience and on the message God was giving. Winters there can be cold and rainy, so it would have been very uncomfortable and even painful at times. What we do know is that the same God who called him to do this difficult thing would have sustained him through it. When God asks for a hard obedience He also gives the strength to carry it out.

That is often how God works. He does not always explain how we will get through the hardship, but He shows us the purpose and He remains faithful to keep and provide for those who walk in obedience to Him.
