There is a teaching which is to the soul what health is to the body. It braces and strengthens. There is also a teaching which leaves the soul fevered or puffed up or palsied.
Paul repeats the phrase because he would have us know that doctrine matters exceedingly. We dare not for a moment think that any doctrine is sound that does not put the crown upon the head of Jesus, and does not exalt the Almighty. And we may judge of the soundness of doctrine by its tendency. We can never think a doctrine sound, when we see plainly upon its very surface that it has a tendency to create sin in men. Unless it be a doctrine according to godliness, we cannot conceive it to be a doctrine of God.
This is why the apostle so urgently charges Timothy, Hold fast the form of sound words. He knew what we are slow to learn, that error in doctrine almost inevitably leads to error in practice. When a man believes wrongly, he will soon act wrongly. Faith has a great influence on our conduct. As a man's faith, so is he.
