It is true that the Lord in His providence has at times made use of a dream, as you note with Joseph and Daniel, and as we see when a warning came to Pilate through his wife who suffered many things in a dream because of Christ, and when a man told his companion of a barley cake tumbled into the host of Midian to give courage to Gideon. In such cases we admire the providence of God, that He is not asleep when we are asleep, and that He can order even the wanderings of the night to accomplish His purpose. Yet we must also remember that if anything beneath the moon might seem to be the creature of pure chance, surely it is a dream. Such wild fantasies seem to be ungoverned and many things operate naturally to fashion a dream, so that we cannot build doctrine or direction upon them.

The mere act of writing down what you have dreamed is not in itself forbidden in Scripture. It becomes a matter of the heart and of use. There are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, and among them is this, avoid everything that is evil, and bow with submission to the will of God, for by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance.
